Sean Patrick Francis Hughes (December 2, 1941 in Farnham, Surrey, England) is a British Emeritus Professor of Orthopedic Surgery.

Career

He studied medicine and had his orthopaedic education in London. He was a Senior Registrar in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, The Middlesex and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (1974-1976).

Academic

From 1979 he was Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. In 1979 he was appointed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Edinburgh. Twelve years later he became Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust (1991-2006). At Imperial College he was Head of Division of Surgery Anaesthetics and Intensive Care (1996-2004) and Director of the Institute of Musculoskeletal Surgery (2004-2006)

Hughes performed basic research on bone blood flow mineral exchange, musculoskeletal infections and stem cell research. He has a special interest in degenerative disc disease and external fixation of fractures (Hughes-Suhktian fixator).

Clinical

From 1991 he was Chief of Service Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust. In 1998 he became Clinical Director Surgery and Anaesthetics, Hammersmith Hospital NHS Trust and from 2002 through 2004 Medical Director of Ravenscourt Park Hospital (DTC), Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust. He was Non-Executive Director of the West Middlesex University Hospital (2001-2005), Honorary Consultant to the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queens Square (1995-2006) and at last Clinical Director of the Hillingdon Primary Care trust (2008-2010).

He was appointed foundation professor in orthopaedic surgery of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and then became head of Surgery Anaesthetics and Intensive Care at Imperial College London. He has been clinical director of Surgery and Anaesthetics at Hammersmith Hospitals and Medical Director of Ravenscourt Park Hospital part of Hammersmith Hospitals NHS trust.

Currently he is Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Imperial College Healthcare Trust London and Chairman of the charity DISCS.

Since retiring he is living in Gloucestershire. He is married to Felicity Hughes, a bacteriologist, with two daughters and one son.
