Shikotan (色丹郡 Shikotan-gun?) is a nominal district that is part of Nemuro Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It covers Shikotan Island, which is claimed by Japan and Russia. As of August 15, 1945, it had a population of 1,038. Although claimed by Japan, it is de facto administered by Russia.
Villages
History
- 1885: Split off Hanasaki District, Nemuro Province. Incorporated into Chishima Province
- August 1945: Soviets occupy the district.
Russian administration
Russia administers the island as part of the South Kurils district of Sakhalin Oblast, administering all of the two villages.
