Svante Thunberg (born 10 June 1969) is a Swedish author, arts manager and producer, and actor.[1] He has written Scener ur hjärtat [Scenes from the heart] with his spouse the operatic mezzo-soprano Malena Ernman. He is also associated with the work of his daughter, youth environmental activist Greta Thunberg.[2][3]

Early life and education

Thunberg was born Svante Fritz Vilhelm Thunberg on 10 June 1969, in Saltsjö-Boo parish in Stockholm County.[4][verification needed] He is the son of actors Olof Thunberg and Mona Andersson.[4][verification needed][5]

Thunberg appeared in two plays at the Royal Dramatic Theater Dramaten in 1991: as a choir member and extra in Romeo and Juliet, and as named character "Ettan" in Peter Pan[6]. He trained as an actor at Göteborg University.[when?][7]

Career

After training,[when?] Thunberg joined Riksteatern, or the "Riks",[8] where he toured as an actor in plays of its youth program, the "Unga Riks" [Young Riksteatern], among them Thomas Tidholm's Tralala-la (1997), Börje Lindström's Sprit (1998), Irena Kraus' Ciao bella (1999), and Isa Schöier's Min bror (2000), as well as Petter S. Rosenlund's En hopplös grabb (2001).[9] In 1998 he appeared in an episode of the Swedish television series Skärgårdsdoktorn. He has also portrayed composer Joseph Martin Kraus in an episode of Veckans konsert (sv) in 2002.[10][11]

He now also works as manager and co-producer for his wife, opera singer Malena Ernman.[12][13] Together, they wrote Scener ur hjärtat, in English, Scenes from the Heart, about their family and the environmental crisis.[14][13]

Greta's school strike

He originally stated concerning his daughter Greta's school strike for the climate that "She is supposed to be in school; we cannot support her action,"[15] Later on he stated that "Greta forced us to change our lives, I didn’t have a clue about the climate. We started looking into it, reading all the books – she has read them too."[16] He now manages Greta's career.[17] He accompanied her on the Malizia II racing yacht when she crossed the Atlantic Ocean to visit the Americas.[18]
