Tatyarao Lahane is a current Dean of Grant Medical College and J. J. Hospital, Mumbai known for setting world record for Cataract operations with more than 100,000 cataract surgeries. He was awarded Padma Shri award in 2008 by President of India which is 4th highest civilian award of India.[2][3] But there is an allegation by the ophthalmology residents in his department that he has taken the credit of performing all eye surgeries done in the hospital by the all the teaching staff in the last 20 years (and hence the record). These number of surgeries being performed by a single surgeon is quite absurd. [4]

Early life

Lahane was born in a small village named Makegaon in Latur district of Maharashtra state in farmer's family on 12 February 1957 to father Pudlikrao and mother Anjanabai. He belongs to Denotified Tribes (Vanjhari Samaj).[5] He is one of 7 children of the couple.[6] At young age his both Kidneys were not functioning, his mother donated him one of her Kidney.[1]

As a Ophthalmologist

Before took over as Dean of J J Hospital he was Head of the department of Ophthalmology. As an ophthalmologist he arranged many Cataract camps nationwide and also in JJ Hospital. In 2007 he did his 100,000th Cataract surgery in JJ Hospital which was attended by then Chief Minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh. He is credited for modernizing Ophthalmology department of JJ Hospital.[1][7][8]

As a Dean

He became Dean of Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals in 2010. As a dean he is credited for modernizing Out Patient Department of JJ Hospital along with computerizing the system.[9] The residents have alleged that this was done to keep the residents occupied with typing on computer's while Dr.Lahane engaged with the patients & dictated.[10]

In February 2014, Waghela a sweeper in JJ Hospital accused Dr Lahane of verbally abusing him after the two got into an argument when Waghela asked another sweeper to stop working as all the temporary class-four workers in the hospital had gone on strike demanding their jobs be made permanent. An FIR was lodged against Dr Lahane under section 3(1) and 10 of the Prevention of Atrocities Act and under the Indian Penal Code. Fearing arrest, he is currently out on anticipatory bail.[11]

JJ'S PAY-&-SKIP-JAIL SCAM: Allegations of playing host to undertrials & prisoners in the hospital

There are allegations that Dr.T.P Lahane "hosts" undertrial criminals & politicians lodged in St.George's Hospital, Mumbai's VVIP ward which comes under his administration as Dean Grant Medical College and J. J. Hospital.[12][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy Group of Hospitals is a conglomerate of four hospitals in South Mumbai that includes Sir J. J. Hospital, St George Hospital, Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, and Cama and Albess Hospital. His right-hand man at St.George's Hospital is the medical superintendent Dr.Jagdish Bhavani, who also manages a Urology Unit without any qualification or an M.Ch degree. The beds in his unit are unoccupied most of the time.[19][20] Undertrials, sentenced politicians and gangsters are also allegedly 'served' at J.J Hospital VIP Ward in plush air-conditioned rooms with attached bathrooms, TV, music system & there is free access to family, friends and political associates. While numerous prisoners were allegedly "served" for a monthly ransom in these hospitals, notable occupants during Dr.Lahane's tenure were Suresh Jain for nearly 9 months, Arun Gawli, Chhagan Bhujbal & recently lawyer Ashok Saraogi, who was arrested on April 17 for cheating and forgery & denied bail twice . Saraogi had defended Abu Salem in the Pradeep Jain murder case, and was defending Rahul Raj in the Pratyusha Banerjee suicide case.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18]

All the resident doctors in all the medical colleges in Maharashtra are on an indefinite mass strike protesting against the alleged evil acts of current dean Dr.Tatyarao Lahahe demanding his transfer out of JJ Hospital. They have even posted a video of their experiences on YouTube.[21] MARD has said that they won't return to work unless he is transferred out of JJ Hospital.[10] The video has gained 30,000 views from doctors nationwide & this movement is gaining momentum now.[21]

The Directorate of Medical Education and Research, where Dr.T.P Lahane holds Additional Director charge served a show cause notice on Thursday, a copy of which was received by striking doctors on Friday. "We are not employees, so MESMA can’t be invoked against us. They can’t remove 4,000 doctors," Dr Sagar Mundada, president, MARD, said.[22]

The Bombay high court on Monday asked Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (Mard) to call off their strike & assured that their complaints would be thoroughly probed by a panel headed by a retired High Court Judge. Keeping their trust in the judiciary & expecting justice from the Court, MARD called off their indefinite strike.[23][24]

The Bombay High Court approved re-constitution of a seven-member grievances redressal committee headed by retired high court Judge V C Daga to probe allegations of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) against dean of state-run J.J Hospital Dr T P Lahane for not allowing doctors to perform surgeries & want him transferred out of J.J Hospital. All hopes of the residents rest on this committee's verdict on 23 June 2016.[25] [26]
