The Chaos Chapter: Freeze (stylized as The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE; Hangul: 혼돈의 장: FREEZE; RR: Hondon-eui Jang: Peurijeu) is the second studio album by South Korean boy band TXT. It was released on May 31, 2021 by Big Hit Music and Republic Records.[1]

Background

The Chaos Chapter: Freeze marks the beginning of a new series in their discography, following the gradual and progressive successes of their The Dream Chapter trilogy (2019-2020), their third EP Minisode1: Blue Hour (2020) which served as a "bridge" between the two series and their first Japanese album Still Dreaming (2021) which was released earlier this year. The album contains eight songs, including the lead single, "0X1=Lovesong (I Know I Love You)" featuring Seori. Musically, the album incorporates various different genres including pop, rock, punk, alternative, and disco.[2]

Promotion

The pre-sale of the album began the same day of the announcement of the album, April 30, presenting three physical versions of the album: "World", "Boy" and "You". On May 10, the concept trailer for The Chaos Chapter: Freeze was released on the official Hybe Labels Youtube channel. On May 28 and May 29 respectively, two teasers for the official music video of the title track were released.[3]

The album garnered critical acclaim from music critics, and achieved a 90/100 rating on review aggregator website Album of the Year.[8] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 89 based on 4 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim."[4] Writing for Billboard, Heran Mamo said that "the eight-song project highlights the hybrid pop-rock romantic title track "0X1=Lovesong (I Know I Love You)", featuring South Korean singer Seori. The numbers in the title represent how in the midst of chaos where nothing matters, the boy's love interest is his one and only priority."[9] Teen Vogue's Sara Delgado wrote that "On Freeze, TXT traffic in extremes and, as a result, their stronger tracks are stronger than ever before."[10]

Commercial performance

On May 5, YG Plus, TXT's album manufacture and distributor announced that The Chaos Chapter: Freeze surpassed 520,000 stock preorders, breaking the group's previous record with Minisode1: Blue Hour's 400,000 stock preorders.[11] On May 31, the day of the album's release, it was announced that the album surpassed 700,000 stock preorders.[12]
