The 2003 Cannes Film Festival started on May 14 and ran until May 25. The Palme d'Or went to the American film Elephant by Gus Van Sant based on the Columbine High School massacre.[1][2]

The festival opened with Fanfan la Tulipe, directed by Gérard Krawczyk and closed with Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin, directed by Richard Schickel.[3]
