A.P. Bio is an American comedy television series created by Mike O'Brien for NBC. After a pilot order in late January 2017,[1] the project was ordered to series on May 8, 2017.[2] The series premiered on February 1, 2018 for a special preview and made its official debut on March 1, 2018.[3] NBC released the first three episodes on NBCUniversal streaming platforms after the February 1 broadcast premiere for early viewing.

On May 8, 2018, NBC renewed the series for a second season, which premiered on March 7, 2019.[4][5] On May 24, 2019, NBC cancelled the show after two seasons.[6] In July 2019, NBC reversed this decision and renewed the series for a third season, which is set to premiere on NBCUniversal's upcoming streaming service, Peacock.[7]

Plot

When disgraced Harvard philosophy professor Jack Carson Griffin (Glenn Howerton) loses out on his dream job to his rival Miles Leonard (Tom Bennett), he is forced to return to Toledo, Ohio and work as an advanced placement biology teacher at the fictional Whitlock High School. Jack makes it clear to his class that he will not be teaching any biology. Realising he has a room full of honor-roll students at his disposal, Jack decides to use them for his own benefit: getting revenge on Miles. Eager to prove that he is still king of the castle, Principal Durbin (Patton Oswalt) struggles to keep Griffin under control. In its second season, Jack uses his students to find out how the people of Toledo find happiness in their daily routine, so as to mine information for what he believes will be a best-selling book.

A bully from Jack's time in high school, Greg, is hired by Principal Durbin as a motivational speaker, having climbed Mt. Everest after losing a toe to frostbite. He privately confronts Jack, and continues to bully him. Jack's students steal Greg's toe, causing him to become emotional and berate the school while giving a speech. Meanwhile, Michelle, Mary, and Stef agree to become more assertive, and Principal Durbin repeatedly tries to convince Helen to accept a raise.

The school superintendent is cutting Whitlock High School's budget, and part-time teachers, including Jack, will be let go. Durbin hires Jack full time to work under Helen, but Jack quits during his first day. Jack stakes out the superintendent's house, and gets a photograph of her having an affair. Durbin attempts to destroy the photos, but Jack recovers a printed out copy and blackmails the superintendent into keeping the school's budget.

Jack comforts him, and gets him out of the sewer, only to fall in and get injured once again.

Reception

Critical response

The first season holds a score of 65% with an average rating of 6.34/10 on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 31 reviews. The site's critical consensus states: "A.P. Bio has some genuine laughs, but audiences have already seen plenty of authority figures behaving badly -- and have a right to expect more from this promising premise and talented cast."[39] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the series a score of 59 out of 100 based on 16 critics.[40]

Writing in The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Fienberg commented that A.P. Bio had a good cast and "the only thing holding it back is the small quibble that it's not actually all that funny."[41] Margaret Lyons of the New York Times called A.P. Bio "an abrasive sitcom that isn't merely unfunny, it's also deeply unpleasant."[42] Jen Chaney of Vulture said the series had bright spots but was "conceptually played-out" overall.[43]
