Andrew Gourlay (born 1982) is a British conductor. He is Chief Conductor of the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León).

Early life and studies

Gourlay was born in Jamaica in 1982, and was brought up in the Bahamas, the Philippines, Japan and the United Kingdom.[1][2] He is of Russian descent: his great grandmother was the princess Elizaveta Galitzine; his great great grandfather, Alexander Dmitrievich Zinoviev, was Governor of Saint Petersburg at the time of the Revolution of 1905.[3][4]

Gourlay began his musical training on the piano and the trombone. As a trombonist in his early twenties, he played with prominent British orchestras such as the Philhamonia, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Hallé Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta.[5] He was a member of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, with whom he played under the baton of their founder, Claudio Abbado.[6]

Gourlay studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and University of Manchester, before specialising in conducting at the Royal College of Music in London, where he prepared orchestras for Bernard Haitink and Sir Roger Norrington.[7]

Conducting career

Gourlay has conducted the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Hallé, CBSO, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Opera North, Ulster Orchestra, RTÉ Symphony, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Stavanger Symphony, Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile, RTVE Symphony Orchestra, Tenerife Symphony, Galicia Symphony, Royal Philharmonic of Galicia, Gran Canaria Symphony, Basque National Orchestra, City of Granada Orchestra, Castile and León Symphony, Galicia Symphony, Barcelona Symphony and Rostov Philharmonic.[8][9][10]

In 2010 Gourlay won First Prize, from a field of 225 conductors, at the Cadaqués Orchestra International Conducting Competition.[11] From 2010 to 2012 he was Assistant Conductor to Sir Mark Elder and The Hallé.[12] He acted as a cover conductor for Valery Gergiev, Kurt Masur, and Sir Colin Davis (twice replacing him at the Barbican).[13]

In 2014 Gourlay succeeded Vasily Petrenko as Principal Guest Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Castile and León (Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León).[14] In 2015, he was appointed Music Director of this orchestra, succeeding Lionel Bringuier; he began this position in January 2016 [15]

He has conducted operas for the Royal Opera House, English Touring Opera, and Birmingham Opera Company.[16]
