The College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) is a public engineering college in Chennai, India. Founded in 1794 as a survey school, and 1858 as a Civil Engineering School, it is one of the oldest engineering institutions in the country.

History

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. In 1794, the survey school was started with eight students in a building near Fort St. George by Michael Topping. The school became the Civil Engineering School in 1858 and was rechristened as College of Engineering in 1859, with the inclusion of a mechanical engineering course.

College of Engineering, Guindy offers undergraduate engineering degrees in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Geoinformatics, Agricultural & Irrigation Engineering, Bio Medical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mining Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Information Technology and Printing Technology. It also offers postgraduate degrees such as MBA, MCA, M.E., M.Sc. M.Tech M.S. by Research and Ph.D.programmes.[2]

The college was ranked 12th in the Outlook India Top Engineering Colleges of 2012,[4] however has been unranked in subsequent years 2013 to 2015.[5][6][7] In rankings of government colleges, it ranked #9 in the Mint Top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009.[3]

Student life

Clubs

The college has many student-run clubs including Quizzers Anonymous (the official quiz club), Sruthilaya (music), Twisters (dance), Snap It (photography), Theatron (dramatics), Robotics Club, CSAU (Computer Society of Anna University), Capitalize (entrepreneurship), Literary club, Guindy Times (campus magazine), Aakriti (women empowerment), Siruthuligal (charity), Leo club, Rotract Club, Students' Quality Club (SQC), and Green Brigade (environment). Apart from these clubs, student wings of NCC, NSS, NSO and YRC also function on campus.

Hostels

The campus has 16 hostel blocks named after flowers of which five are exclusively for women. Dining facilities are provided in five large centralized halls. The hostels accommodate only undergraduate students and there is a separate hostel for NRIs and foreign nationals.

Cultural events

Since 2007, the CEG conducts an international techno-management festival called Kurukshetra.[8] Every year in February, CEG plays host to Techofes,[9] a four-day inter-collegiate cultural festival. In October, Agni, the intra-college cultural festival is conducted. Sangarsh is an annual fundraiser conducted by Rotaract.[10]
