The Evergreen Cemetery gatehouse is an American Civil War site used as the Battle of Gettysburg headquarters of the XI Corps (Union Army) by General Oliver O. Howard[3] The building was damaged by nearby military engagements[citation needed] such as the July 2 Battle of East Cemetery Hill, and the railroad depot's telegraph key was moved to near the gatehouse when the borough was evacuated. The gatehouse's 2 brick towers support a memorial arch,[specify] and the structure was repaired in 1885 when an attached lodge was built.[4]

In 1972, the "Evergreen Cemetery archway house" was designated an historic district contributing structure by the Gettysburg council[5] (1 of 38 outside of the borough).[6]
