Fernand Marie Charles Dusaussay de Mély (12 October 1851 – 25 March 1935) was a French archaeologist, writer, art critic and collector. He was mayor of Mesnil-Germain (Calvados) from 1881 to 1934 (53 years).

Biography

Fernand de Mély was born in Nogent-sur-Seine. He studied medieval philology and art history under the direction of Anatole de Montaiglon. He was a member of the Société archéologique d'Eure-et-Loir in 1880. He became a member of the Society of the History of France in 1886. Mély was elected a resident member of the Société nationale des antiquaires de France in 1903.

He published numerous articles in the Bulletin de l'Académie des inscriptions, in the memoirs of the Eugène Piot Foundation, in the Revue de l'art chrétien, in the Bulletin monumental, in the Revue archéologique, in the Revue de l'art, and in the Gazette des beaux-arts. He devoted a great number of studies to the treasures of churches and museums, on precious stones, goldsmith's objects, ivories, tapestries, paintings, sculptures, miniatures, on liturgy, iconography.

In 1913, he turned to the miniaturists in Les Primitifs et leurs signatures, of which he had published a first article in the Revue archéologique in 1911. Ten years later he published a second article that completes the first and gave an overview of his research on ancient monuments and the artists who work on them: Nos vieilles cathédrales et leurs maîtres d'œuvre.

The Dussaussay de Mély family was for a long time the owner of the Mesnil-Germain manor or "château de Mesly" or "de Mély", built in the 18th century.

Fernand de Mély had built up a voluminous library of several thousand works, including some very rare editions. In 1953, his daughter Yvonne donated a part of these works to the municipal library of Livarot.
