Ilan Airways or Ilan Air was a United States airline formed in August 1984 in New York City as a partnership between Alexander 'Andy' Ilan and his brother Mihai Iliescu.

Beginnings

The company was incorporated in New York State on December 21, 1984. The main tenet of its business plan was the goal of providing a business class service on a coach fare structure. The airline was scheduled to open a new line on the North Atlantic Corridor, a direct flight between John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany, a segment not provided at the time by a non-stop direct flight, neither by the US major operators, nor by Lufthansa A.G.

Business plan

Ilan Air was slated to operate scheduled flights as a piggy-back operation, while the aircraft, flight and cabin crews would have been provided under a wet-lease by American Trans Air, of Indianapolis, Indiana. The business model was based on per block hours operations farmed out to existent service suppliers. Service components, such as reservations, revenue accounting, ramp and catering operations were all negotiated by the partners.

Closing

The initial flight was scheduled for April 17, 1987. In the end, the partners were not able to secure enough capitalization. The operation was shut down in January 1988. Even though operating contracts had been signed, the partners were never sued for breach of contract.
