Jibannagar (Bengali: জীবননগর) is an Upazila of Chuadanga District in the Division of Khulna, Bangladesh.

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Jibannagar has a population of 125102. Males constitute 51.32% of the population, and females 48.68%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 61511. Jibannagar has an average literacy rate of 22.4% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]

Administration

Jibannagar Upazila with an area of 199.32 km2, is bounded by chuadanga sadar upazila on the north, maheshpur upazila on the south, kotchandpur upazila on the east, west Bengal of India on the west. Main rivers are bhairab and kobadak.Archaeological heritage and relics Three-domed Mosque at village Dhopakhali.

Monohorpur is an ideal village in jibannagar.Here most of the people are educated.The main occupation is agriculture,business,service etc.Here many people stay abroad in various countries and earn foreign currency that played an important role to develop the economy of the village.Young people are very interested to develop to remove the illiteracy. They form a Charitable organization name "Moshal". Their mission is burning the lamp with the help of education and remove the social darkness. Mr. Shultan Mahmud Bokul & Asif Anjum Peash lead the organization effectively.

Historical events During the War of Liberation 10 members of the Pak army were killed and wounded by mine exploded by the freedom fighters. A direct encounter between the freedom fighters and the Pak army was held on the Dhopakhali border of the upazila in which five freedom fighters were killed and two were wounded.

Population 125102; male 51.32%, female 48.68%; Muslim 95%, Hindu 3.3%, Christian 0.25% and others 1.25%.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 22.4%; male 27.8% and female 16.6%. Educational institutions: college 2, high school 9, junior high school 3, primary school 50, madrasa 18, kindergarten school 1. Noted educational institution: Jibannagar Pilot High School (1957).

Main occupations Agriculture 41.07%, agricultural labourer 33.14%, wage labourer 2.6%, commerce 11.49%, service 3.47%, transport 1.68% and others 6.55%.

Land control Among the peasants 22.47% are landless, 22.72% marginal, 22.65% small, 18.56% intermediate and 13.06% rich.

Main crops Paddy, jute, wheat, potato, sugarcane, onion, garlic mug and musuri.

Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, papaya, coconut, betel nut and banana.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 28.7 km, semi pucca 33.9 km and mud road 276 km; railways 13 km.

Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), horse carriage (nearly extinct) and boat.

Manufactories Cotton mill, rice mill, flour mill, ice factory, saw mill, welding, etc.

Cottage industries Weaving, bamboo work, goldsmith, blacksmith, potteries, construction work, bidi and tailoring.

Hats, bazars and fairs Total number of hats and bazars are 14; fairs 2 (Baruni and Gangapuja).

Main exports Paddy, jute, potato, onion, sugarcane, banana and betel nut.
