On the night of Easter Monday March 31, 1578, assassins murdered the treasury secretary Juan de Escobedo in cold blood in the royal palace of El Escorial). There ensues a series of investigations that are aimed at people close to the Court of Philip II.

This fictional story is not to be confused with The El Escorial Conspiracy led by Crown Prince Ferdinand which occurred in 1807 during the reign of Ferdinand's father Charles IV of Spain.
