List of Academy Award winners and nominees from India

This is the list of Indians and persons of Indian origin who are Academy Award (informally known as Oscar) winners and nominees. As of 2016, eleven Indians have been nominated for a total of fourteen Oscars, five Indians of whom have won a total of six Oscars. Three Indian films have been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Satyajit Ray is the only Indian who has received an Honorary Academy Award, and A.R.Rahman is the only Indian who has won more than one Academy Award. In 1982, The National Film Development Corporation of India was instrumental in co-producing Richard Attenborough's Academy Award for Best Picture winning film Gandhi.[1][2]

Satyajit Ray became the first Indian to receive an Honorary Academy Award in 1992.

Gulzar became the first Indian lyricist to receive an Academy Award for penning Jai Ho. He has also been awarded with India's highest film honor Dadasaheb Phalke award.
