Manfred Groten

Manfred Groten (November 9, 1949 in Hemmerden) is a German historian.

Biography

After graduating from the Theodor-Schwann-Gymnasium in Neuss, Manfred Groten studied History, English, Archaeology, Art History and Medieval Latin at the University of Cologne from 1970 to 1977. In 1977, he received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of the priors and cathedral chapters of Cologne in the High Middle Ages, inspired by Odilo Engels. From 1977 to 1979, he attended the Marburg School of Archives and from 1979 to 1998 worked as an archivist at the Historical Archives of the City of Cologne. With a thesis on Köln im 13. Jahrhundert. Gesellschaftlicher Wandel und Verfassungsentwicklung ("Cologne in the 13th century. Social change and constitutional development"), Groten habilitated in medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences in 1991 and has since taught at the University of Cologne. In 1998, he became professor (C3) for medieval history with special emphasis on auxiliary sciences.

In 1999, Groten accepted an appointment at the University of Bonn. From 1999 to 2015, he taught there as Professor of Medieval and Modern History/Rhenish Regional History. Since then, he has headed the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland and, since 2005, its successor institution, the Department of Rhenish Regional History of the Institute of Historical Studies at the University of Bonn. Groten has been co-editor of the Yearbook and Publications of the Cologne Historical Society since 1994 and co-editor of the Rheinische Vierteljahrsblätter and the Rheinisches Archiv since 1999. Since 2000, Groten has been a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia.

His main research interests are European history from the 11th to the 13th century, especially constitutional, ecclesiastical, intellectual and cultural history, Rhenish regional history from the 11th to the 17th century, the study of groups of people, urban history and sigillography (seal studies).
