Matt Little is the Mayor of Lakeville, Minnesota. He also previously served a Lakeville City Council member. Little graduated magna cum laude at the University of Minnesota Law School.
Background
Matt Little grew up in Lakeville, Minnesota and attended ISD 196 (Apple Valley, Eagan, Rosemount) schools until his graduation in spring 2003. Even at a young age, Matt was very active in school activities and community events. His success in student debate even earned him a full scholarship to the University of Missouri at Kansas City. After transferring to the University of Minnesota, Morris between his sophomore and junior years, he graduated with a degree in political science in spring 2007.[1] He worked as a law clerk with the Dakota County prosecutor’s office while he completed his law degree at the University of Minnesota. Matt was hired as an attorney by Mendota Heights-based law firm Sieben Edmunds PLLC in September 2014.[2]
Time at City Hall
In November 2010, Little was elected to his first term on the Lakeville City Council.[3] His campaign focused primarily on investing in public safety, using smart fiscal management, and creating a friendly environment for local business.[4] He earned one of two seats in an eight-person field to become the youngest ever person - at 25 years old - to serve on the Lakeville City Council.
Little first ran for mayor of Lakeville in 2012.[5] Throughout the election, Little’s campaign was the subject of attack ads from Americans for Prosperity, a large national Super PAC.[6] In the end, Little won the election with a plurality of 44 percent of the vote in a three-person field.[7] Little gained recognition for his matter-of-fact style, creative fundraising methods,[8] and a lengthy policy document not typically seen at the local level.[9] Once elected, Little focused heavily on making the mayor’s office more visible and available to local residents. He instituted weekly ‘Meetings with the Mayor’ that allowed anyone in the community to voice their ideas or concerns directly to the Mayor.[10]
