Montes de Oro is the fourth canton in the province of Puntarenas in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 244.76 km²,[1] and has a population of 13,259.[2] Its capital city is Miramar.

Geography

The mountainous canton lies in the Cordillera de Tilarán northeast of the city of Puntarenas. It is limited on the north by the Río Aranjuez. The Río San Miguel and Río Tiacinto delineate the southern boundary.

Districts

The canton of Montes de Oro is subdivided into three districts (distritos):

  1. Miramar
  2. La Unión
  3. San Isidro

History

The canton was created by law on July 17, 1915.
