Moul is a clan surname that originated in area of Roxburghshire, Scotland, prior to the Anglo-Saxon invasion. Via immigration, the name is also found in Ireland and parts of England. The correct pronunciation is with an "ow" sound, similar to foul, mountain, or mouse. While commonly mispronounced as "mole", "mule" or some other variation of the two, the word is Gaelic and does not use French rules of pronunciation.
Also spelled Moule, Mowl, Moulle, Mowell, etc., up through the mid-19th century, records of people with this name can be found in the USA in pre-Revolutionary times, located primarily in Pennsylvania. Other members of the Moul clan came to the USA during the potato famine of Ireland and quickly spread to Chicago and then Nebraska when land was available for homesteading in the middle of the 19th century. One group migrated to Wisconsin and then to Canada, with some members returning to the USA from British Columbia in the later parts of the 20th century.
In the second half the 20th century family members migrated from western Nebraska to the western half of the United States, settling predominantly on the Pacific coast and the Rocky Mountains, though the majority of Moul clan members are still located in Pennsylvania and New York. All people with the last name of Moul are descended from the same Scot clan and are related, however distantly.
