The City of Bankstown is a city and Local Government Area in south-west Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It consists of a number of suburbs including Bass Hill, Greenacre, Georges Hall and Milperra, among others. The City is bounded by the City of Parramatta and Auburn Council to the north, the City of Fairfield and the City of Liverpool to the west, the Sutherland Shire to the south, and the City of Canterbury, the City of Hurstville and the Municipality of Strathfield to the east.

Bankstown has one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Australia. Home to a large Lebanese community, Bankstown also boasts large populations of Greek, Chinese, Vietnamese and Slavic migrants. In all, over 60 different languages are spoken. Bankstown is considered as one of the most multicultural areas in the country.

The Dunc Gray Velodrome is located at Bass Hill approximately 5 kilometers south of the Sydney suburb of Bankstown. The Dunc Gray Velodrome was opened on November 28 1999 and is named after Edgar "Dunc" Gray, the first Australian to win a cycling Gold Medal at the Olympic Games (Los Angeles 1932).
In April 2000 it hosted the 'The Bankstown Millennium Buzz' performance in celebrating the Olympics and the millennium year. It hosted six days of Track Cycling events at the 2000 Summer Olympics, as well as Paralympic cycling.

Vince Sorrenti (born 25 March 1961 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian stand-up comedian from Punchbowl, New South Wales. He is of Italian descent. Sorrenti performs at many functions and events, including, most recently, the 2005 AFL Grand Final Breakfast. He writes an opinion piece for The Daily Telegraph, and in 2004 appeared on A Current Affair with his comedy antics.
Vince Sorrenti was also a resident of Punchbowl, New South Wales and went to Banskstown Boys High School.
