Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School (PMHSS) is a private institution located in the southern suburbs of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The school is recognized by the state government of Tamil Nadu and is affiliated with the matriculation system of Tamil Nadu up to Standard 10 and the Tamil Nadu State Board for Standards 11 and 12.

Founded in 1978 by Dr. K. Vasudevan, (the current principal and correspondent) PMHSS is well known for consistently achieving state ranks in Standard 10 and 12 public examinations.[1][2] The high academic standard of this institution is further underlined by the number of its students who have enrolled in prestigious professional institutions like the College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras Institute of Technology, Birla Institute of Technology and Madras Medical College.

About 3,000 students attend the school, with about 350 students in each year from grades 9-12.

Co-curricular and Extracurricular Activities

Once every two years, the school organizes an exhibition called the Student's Science Arts and Crafts Exhibition, which demonstrates the creative strengths of its students. Projects are judged for technical depth, creativity, and presentation. This extravaganza opens with a procession of students and faculty through the streets of Madipakkam, followed by three days of exhibitions in the Madipakkam school. The exhibition closes with a formal awards ceremony on the final day.

The school also annually hosts athletics and volleyball competitions. Like many other schools, PMHSS celebrates Annual Day with much fanfare at the end of each academic year. This includes stage performances by students such as fancy dress competitions, drama, dance, and music. These cultural events are followed by an awards ceremony for students who have excelled in standard 10 and 12 board examinations, other academics, and sports throughout the year.

Public image and review

Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School (PMHSS) is regularly the first choice for parents in the Madipakkam, Nanganallur, and Velachery region who are seeking admission for their children. This recognition is a direct consequence of the high academic achievements of the school. Nevertheless, PMHSS is under constant criticism from neutral observers for having very strict policies and practices of classwork and homework demands across the standards. The school's rigorous implementation of attendance rules and penalties for 'under-performance' in school examinations is severe. Its rigorous regimen of special classes that are known to improve performance (particularly in standards 10–12), with negligible attention to sports and extra-curricular activities makes PMHSS a demanding learning environment. The homework, assignment practices of the school are said to have a toll on the students too.

Branches

PMHSS was originally started in Madipakkam on 12 June 1978, and subsequently a branch was opened in Nangannalur, both of which are well-known suburbs in southern Chennai. The school at Madipakkam is the Head Office. The school building consists of an Annex, the higher secondary block, the lower primary block, and another large plot used as the playground as well as the school's parking lot.
