He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He attended Colegio Sagrada Familia prior to playing professional and was taken by the Houston Astros in the 35th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft,[1] beginning his pro career that year. He batted .295 in 18 games for the Greeneville Astros in 2008, but batted no higher than .250 from 2009 to 2011. In the 2011 Puerto Rican Winter League, he batted .333 in 39 at-bats for the Gigantes de Carolina, however. In 2012, his average jumped to .285 in 69 games between the Lancaster JetHawks and Corpus Christi Hooks. He was a Texas League Mid-Season All-Star that year. After a down year in 2014, he became a free agent and signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies for 2015; that year, he hit .318 between the Reading Fightin' Phils and Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. The Brewers signed him on November 19, 2015.[2]

He has appeared in MLB Spring Training each year since 2012.[3]
