Skam Italia (often stylized as SKAM Italia) is an Italian teen drama television series based on the Norwegian television series Skam. The series first aired on 23 March 2018 on TIMvision.

Plot

The series follows the daily lives of students at the Liceo J.F. Kennedy in Rome as they deal with typical issues of adolescence. Each season follows a different protagonist and centers on topics such as relationship insecurities, slut-shaming, coming out, mental illness, and toxic masculinity.[1] The show occurs in real time, meaning when something happens at a certain date or time, scenes are uploaded to the show's website, called "clips." The show also utilizes Instagram and text message screenshots to give the characters a realistic feel. After the show's Netflix revival in season 4 and subsequent seasons after, the real-time and transmedia aspects are dropped, as all episodes are released at once.

Production and release

In October 2017, it was announced that Skam would be remade in several European countries, including Italy.[2][3] The first season, which was directed by Ludovico Bessegato, was released on TIMvision on 23 March 2018.[4][5]

Skam Italia was renewed for a second season in June 2018, with Bessegato confirmed to be directing.[6] In July, it was revealed that the Italian series would follow a different order from the Norwegian series, with the second season focusing on Martino.[7] The first episode of the second season was released on 12 October 2018 on TIMvision.[8]

In October 2018, filming for the third season was announced,[9] with Eleonora and Edoardo as protagonists.[10] Unlike the prior two seasons, the third season was directed by Ludovico Di Martino, rather than Bessegato.[11] The first episode of the third season was released on 15 May 2019 on TIMvision.[12]

Production of the fourth season was announced in December 2019 with Ludovico Bessegato returning as director.[13] The season was co-produced by Netflix, who acquired the rights to distribute the first three seasons on 1 January 2020. The entire fourth season was released on Netflix on 15 May 2020, and focused on Sana, a Muslim-Italian girl.[14][15]

In June 2021, Netflix announced the production of the fifth season, which would release in 2022.[16] The season's protagonist was Elia, whose sexual insecurities stemmed from his micropenis.[17] The entire fifth season was released on Netflix on 1 September 2022.[18]

On 26 January 2023, Netflix announced the production of the sixth season.[19][20] Filming began on 27 February with Tiziano Russo directing.[21]
