Thomas Richard Miller High School is a public high school in Brewton, Alabama educating students in grades 9-12. The school shares its name with a timber baron that financially contributed to the construction of the school building. The school mascot is the Tiger.

History

The current school location, located off Douglas Ave in the north section of town, was used beginning in 1962 after moving from the previous home across the street from the Brewton Elementary school located less than a mile south. The school consisted of three wings, a lunch room, a gym, a choir room, a art room, and an office area. The school was expanded to include a fourth wing, used for science classes, in 1994. Recent additions include an auditorium and band room (built in 1998), a field house for the football program (completed in 2001), and a new gym (completed in 2002). In 2014, the lunchroom and a few class rooms were demolished. In 2015 the three wings of classrooms, the office, and media center were demolished. In 2015, two wings of class rooms opened in the same location. The wings included class rooms, office rooms, a lunch room, and a media center. The auditorium, band room, art room, choir room, two gyms, science wings, and field house are still in use. Renovation began in 2015 for the football and baseball fields and stadiums.

Competition Teams

T. R. Miller's competition teams, such as the Marching Tiger Band has been successful for many years since the erection of the organization. They have brought home hundreds of trophies and plaques. The walls in the TRM band room can barely hold all of these trophies.[citation needed] Some excess are stored in the vault above the band room. The TRM Tiger band had, in years past, hosted the Dixieland Band Contest, and in 2011, this annual tradition was brought back to life. Other teams like Scholar's Bowl, Math Team, and Envirobowl are very celebrated. Math Team has won for the past two years at the annual math competition at Jefferson Davis Community College. Envirobowl recently placed 1st in the regional tournament. Scholar' Bowl has won several tournaments throughout the year of 2011/2012.[citation needed]

Sports

T.R. Miller High School has had success in several athletic programs, especially since the mid-1980s. The men's basketball team brought home a mythical state championship in 1952, which is to date the only championship the boys basketball program has won. The athletic program most closely identified with the school is the football team. The Tigers currently have six state championships (1969, 1984, 1991, 1994, 2000, and 2002.[2]) Most of the success has been under the helm of hometown boy turned head coach, Jamie Riggs. Under Riggs the Tigers have won 4 state titles. The T.R. Miller football team was considered to be "the winningest football team of the 90's" in the State of Alabama. The Tiger track program has won numerous state championships over the last 20 years, including most recently in 2009, 2010, and 2011,[3][4] and the Lady Tiger basketball team brought home state titles in 1995, 1996, 2002, and 2009.[5]
