TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs (2012) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by WWE, which took place on December 16, 2012, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.[4] It was the fourth annual TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs event, the first professional wrestling event to be held at the Barclays Center, and WWE's first event held in Brooklyn. In addition to the event, winners of several categories of the WWE Slammy Awards were announced in the pre-show.[5] The event also marks the in-ring debut of The Shield. The event received 175,000 pay-per-view buys, down from 179,000 buys the previous year.[6]

TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs involved different wrestlers from scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on WWE's television programs. Wrestlers portrayed villains or heroes as they followed a series of events that built tension, and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.[7]

To open the PPV, WWE tolled the bell 26 times in tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The major rivalry going into TLC was between the reigning WWE Champion CM Punk and Ryback. Having been denied the title at Hell in the Cell by 'rogue official' Brad Maddox, Ryback along with John Cena competed in a triple threat match for Punk's title at Survivor Series. However, Punk was able to retain the title again when the debuting trio of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns interfered and powerbombed Ryback through a table as he was closing in on victory. The trio followed this up by putting Ryback through a table once again the next night on Raw, and, calling themselves The Shield, continued to attack a myriad of superstars over the following weeks including repeated assaults on the WWE Tag Team Champions, Team Hell No, who vowed to put aside the personal differences which had marred their title reign and become united as a result.[8] Having been denied the chance to win the WWE Championship at Survivor Series, Ryback was granted another opportunity at the title in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match against Punk.[9] However, the following week during a brawl involving The Shield, Team Hell No and The Miz, Ryback assaulted Punk with a chair and a ladder before powerbombing him through a table. The next day, Punk underwent surgery for a (legit) knee injury, and so was removed from the card. Instead, Ryback would team with Team Hell No against Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns in a Six Man tag team TLC match. This match (which was announced via a press release by WWE chairman Vince McMahon) differed from standard TLC matches as it would be decided via pinfall or submission.[10] The original TLC match between CM Punk and Ryback will be rescheduled to the first WWE Raw of 2013.

Big Show captured the World Heavyweight Championship on October 28, 2012 at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view after defeating then-reigning champion Sheamus.[11] The conflict between Big Show and Sheamus intensified after the match, leading to Big Show's attack on Sheamus and William Regal while the two were visiting an English pub during WWE's European tour.[4] Another fight broke out between the two of them in a parking lot during the November 16 episode of SmackDown.[4] The conflict reached its worst during their Survivor Series rematch fight: the Big Show used a referee to shield himself from the Brogue Kick and managed to deliver a knockout punch (WMD) while Sheamus was checking on the downed referee.[4][12] This foul play ultimately caused the Big Show to be disqualified from the match, meaning he retained his title.[4] Shortly after failing to regain the title, Sheamus attacked Big Show using a steel chair while the Big Show pleaded for a cessation of the attacks.[4] Sheamus relented, but followed up the beating by performing his finishing move, the Brogue Kick, on the Big Show.[4] Therefore, the 2012 chairs match between Big Show and Sheamus was first announced on the November 23 episode of SmackDown by General Manager Booker T.[4] TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs events have been an emotional point for Big Show as he both gained and then lost his title during the last event held in 2011 in a record of 45 seconds, as a result of Daniel Bryan cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase after Mark Henry knocked out Show post-match.[4]

Leading up to Survivor Series, Wade Barrett replaced The Miz as the final entrant of Team Ziggler, matching up with Kofi Kingston. During the Survivor Series tag team match between Team Foley and Team Ziggler, Barrett managed to pin Kingston and eliminate him.[13] On the November 19 episode of Raw, Barrett defeated Kingston in a non-title match.[14] During the November 26 edition of Raw, Barrett was granted a match to vie for the Intercontinental Championship title at the TLC event.[15]

Since October 2012, John Cena was accused of having an inappropriate romantic relationship with AJ Lee during the latter's time as Raw general manager, which newly appointed Raw managing supervisor Vickie Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler were trying to prove, beginning a feud between Cena and Ziggler.[16] During the December 3rd episode of Raw, Guerrero (after being coaxed by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon) made a ladder match between Cena and Ziggler for Ziggler's Money in the Bank World Heavyweight Championship contract at the TLC PPV. It marked the second time Ziggler would defend his contract.[17]

Antonio Cesaro was feuding with R-Truth heading into the pay-per-view after R-Truth unsuccessfully challenged him for the United States Championship at Survivor Series. The weeks building up included them facing off in a Six Man Tag Team Match and with Cesaro mocking America on the episode of SmackDown before the show. R-Truth suffered a small knee injury but competed anyway.

Event

Prior to the show airing live on pay per view, the crowd in attendance were shown an untelevised match pitting a "Santa's Little Helpers" battle royal for the #1 contendership to the Divas Championship between Alicia Fox, Aksana, Naomi, Cameron, Tamina Snuka, Kaitlyn, Layla, Natalya and Rosa Mendes. Naomi won the match after last eliminating Kaitlyn. The WWE also offered a tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting just prior to the start of the show. The audience was prompted to rise as the bell was tolled 26 times in a gesture of respect to the 26 victims of the tragedy, their families, and everyone affected by the events.

Preliminary matches

The first match was a tables match to determine the number one contender for the Tag Team Championship between Team Rhodes Scholars and the team of Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara. The match started with Damien Sandow and Rey, Cara and Cody Rhodes. Cara took Sandow out on the floor while Rey brought Cody in the ring for back and forth. Rey went for 619 and nailed it. Sin Cara came in and took down Sandow with an enziguri. Sin Cara tried to springboard in on Sandow but Cody rushed in and shoved Cara out of mid-air, sending him crashing through a table on the floor.

Next was the United States Championship match between the defending champion Antonio Cesaro and the #1 contender R-Truth. Cesaro took control at first, but then Truth turned it around and took Cesaro to the mat. Cesaro tried to take Truth to the turnbuckles but Truth hulked up and fought back. Truth dropped Cesaro twice and hit the big elbow off the ropes. Truth went with a kick and then the scissors kick. Cesaro hit an uppercut from behind and then the Neutralizer for the win and retaining the championship.

The third match was for the WWE Intercontinental Championship between champion Kofi Kingston and Wade Barrett. After hitting Kingston with a side slam, Barret went for the Bull Hammer, but Kingston was able to reverse the move and hit the Trouble in Paradise to get the win and retain the championship.

Main event matches

The first main event was a six-man tables, ladders and chairs tag-team match which was to be decided by either pinfall or submission between The Shield and the trio of Team Hell No (Kane and Daniel Bryan) and Ryback. This was The Shield's debut match in WWE. The Shield dominated the early part of the match by focusing their attacks to isolate one of their opponents and then taking advantage of the subsequent numerical advantage. The three men put Ryback through the Spanish announcers table early on and moments later Ambrose and Rollins gave Daniel Bryan a double superplex off a table. However, when they tried that same move on Kane he powered out of it and briefly gave his team the advantage, until the numbers once again caught up to him. Kane was then speared through the ringside barricade by Reigns, and The Shield members then buried Kane in rubble, taking him out for the rest of the match. Bryan rallied and applied the Yes! Lock on each Shield member, but due to the 3-on-1 advantage The Shield had he couldn't keep it on for long. When it appeared that The Shield were finally going to pin Bryan, Ryback recovered to come to Bryan's aid. Ryback was able to hit Shell Shocked on Dean Ambrose, but Rollins and Reigns broke up the pin attempt. A few minutes later while battling at the top of the entrance ramp, Rollins was tossed off a ladder and through two tables by Ryback. Inside of the ring, Reigns and Ambrose gave Bryan a triple powerbomb through a table to get the win.

The next match was the WWE Divas Championship match between Eve Torres and Naomi. Eve won this short bout cleanly with a neck breaker.

The chairs match for the World Heavyweight Championship between Big Show and the challenger Sheamus followed. Sheamus had the advantage when he delivered a shoulder block off the ropes with a chair. When he tried it again, Big Show hit him with the spear. Show then methodically beat up Sheamus with a chair. Show hit the Chokeslam but couldn't get the win. He then tossed four chairs into the ring. After putting one on top of the chest of Sheamus, Show gave him a modified splash off the ropes but still couldn't get the win. Show went to give Sheamus a chokeslam through two chairs but Sheamus countered it into the White Noise through the chairs but he couldn't get the win either. Sheamus went for the Brogue Kick but missed and his leg got trapped in the ropes. Big Show took advantage of this by nailing the Knockout Punch. Show then brought out a large chair and hit Sheamus with it to get the win.

Next was an unannounced six-man tag team match between the team of The Miz, Alberto Del Rio and The Brooklyn Brawler against the 3MB. The Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale on Jinder Mahal then he tagged in The Brooklyn Brawler. The Brooklyn Brawler then applied the Boston Crab to get the victory for his team.

The final match of the evening was for Ziggler's World Heavyweight Championship Money in the Bank contract. This match was between Dolph Ziggler and John Cena. Early in the match, Cena got a cut over right eye. When Cena started to climb the ladder, Dolph caught him and applied the sleeper hold. When John passed out, both men wound up falling through a table that was set up next to the ladder. When Ziggler went to climb up the ladder, Cena folded the ladder and tried for the Attitude Adjustment with Ziggler on top of it. Cena applied the STF and caused Ziggler to briefly pass out. Cena then went for the AA again but Dolph reversed it into the Zig Zag. A few moments later, Cena went for the move again but Ziggler countered with a DDT. Cena showed the show-off some of his own athleticism by hitting a hurricarana which drove Ziggler through a table. Cena went for another AA but Ziggler grabbed a chair and started hitting Cena with it. Cena then it the AA which caused Ziggler to fall out of the ring. Vickie Guerrero entered the ring with a chair but before she could hit Cena with it, AJ stormed the ring and hit her with the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena started to climb the ladder but then AJ tipped it over. Dolph then climbed the ladder and retrieved his briefcase.

Aftermath

The big stories out of this show were the face turn by Alberto Del Rio and the heel turn by AJ Lee. On the New Year's Eve episode of Raw, the champions were allowed to pick their opponents to defend their titles against. Big Show challenged Del Rio's ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, and brutally assaulted him until Del Rio came to Rodriguez's rescue. This caused Del Rio to turn face and winning the World Heavyweight Championship from Big Show in a Last Man Standing match on the January 11 showing of SmackDown. AJ said that she felt that Cena had betrayed her when he told her not to attend his matches, and she turned heel and became the in-story girlfriend of Ziggler.

Ryback ended up getting his title rematch against Punk on the first Raw episode of 2013 in a TLC match, but again failed to capture it due to interference by The Shield. The Rock went on to defeat Punk and end his reign at 434 days at the Royal Rumble.

Kaitlyn received two more opportunities at the Divas Championship, defeating Eve via DQ and countout each time. Kaitlyn finally defeated Eve to capture the Divas Championship on the 20th Anniversary edition of Raw on January 14, 2013 in Kaitlyn's hometown of Houston. Eve quit WWE in an exclusive segment after losing the title.
