Teneo is an US-based global advisory firm that partners exclusively with the CEOs and senior leaders of many of the world’s largest and most complex companies and organizations. [3] The firm works with clients to address a wide range of financial, reputational and transformational challenges and opportunities by combining the disciplines of strategic communications, investor relations, investment banking, financial analytics, executive recruiting, digital analytics, corporate governance, government affairs, business intelligence, management consulting and corporate restructuring on an integrated basis. Teneo’s clients include the CEOs of many Fortune 100 companies across a diverse range of industry sectors.

History

Teneo was founded in June of 2011 by three partners: Declan Kelly (former U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland, U.S. CEO of Financial Dynamics, and EVP & CIO of FTI Consulting); Doug Band (Counselor to U.S. President Bill Clinton); and Paul Keary (former Senior Managing Director of FTI Consulting).[4]

The firm is headquartered in New York City, with offices in Washington DC, Brussels, São Paulo, London, Dublin, Dubai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Atlanta, San Francisco, Doha, Singapore, and Toronto and Melbourne.[1] The firm has over 570 employees as of 2016.[2] Teneo's monthly retainer fees have been as high as $250,000.[5]

In December 2014, it was announced that the private equity firm, BC Partners, had acquired a minority stake in Teneo. [6]

In January 2015, Charles Watson was named the Chairman of Teneo International, based in the firm’s London office. On July 9, 2015 Teneo acquired London-based communications agencies Blue Rubicon and Stockwell, effectively doubling in size.[7] Subsequently, on October 26, 2015, Teneo acquired Pendomer Communications, a financial and corporate communications firm based in London. Both Pendomer and StockWell were rebranded as Teneo effective January 2016.

On February 24th, 2016 Teneo announced that Twelve Rolling Capital, a boutique investment banking firm based in the Washington D.C. area, would join the Teneo Capital investment banking platform. [8]

Partnerships

Teneo has partnered with The Johnson School of Business at Cornell University to create the Teneo Leadership Institute. The partnership is designed to help equip the next generation of CEOs and senior executives with the skills and competencies required to combat volatile markets, geopolitical winds and other disruptors facing global businesses. Teneo’s partnership with Cornell also brings together the best minds from around the globe in intimate, unique and private settings to tackle the leadership challenges of today and tomorrow through real-world experiences, dialogue and exchange. [9]

Teneo has sponsored Northern Irish golfer Graeme McDowell (winner of the 2010 US Open) for several years.

Teneo is also a partner of Billie Jean King across her business and philanthropic endeavors, with a particular focus on the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative (BJKLI). Teneo was an advisor to and primary sponsor of the Shareholder-Director Exchange Protocol (SDX™ Protocol) when it was launched in 2014. SDX™ Protocol was created by a working group of leading independent directors and representatives from some of the largest and most influential long-term institutional investors. The group came together to provide guidance to other investors and directors about the growing trend towards shareholder-director engagement.

Involvement in politics

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair were paid advisers to Teneo. The New Republic described "the extent to which Teneo’s business model depend[ed] on [Band's] relationship with Clinton" as "striking".[3] Clinton ended his relationship with Teneo on February 2012.[25] Doug Band's longtime advisor relationship with Clinton ended in 2013 after concerns that Band had leveraged his ties with Clinton too much for his own business interests with Teneo.[3]

During the latter half of 2012, Huma Abedin was working as a paid consultant for Teneo, while also working as special government employee for U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.[26] In July 2013, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) initiated an investigation into Abedin’s activities and pay during that period.[27][28][29] In November 2015 the New York Times reported that in a letter to Senator Grassley Teneo stated that prior to Ms. Abedin’s hiring it had required her to sign an independent contract agreement that she would avoid any work that could potentially pose a conflict with her role at the State Department. “We have no reason to believe any of her activities as an independent contractor were inconsistent with the commitments she made in this regard,” wrote Mr. Kelly according the media report.
