The Tooting by-election will be a by-election in the constituency of Tooting, triggered by the resignation of Sadiq Khan from Parliament following his election as Mayor of London.[1][2][3]

The Labour Party confirmed the timetable for the by-election and that the date of the vote would be Thursday 16 June 2016.[4]

Candidates

Rosena Allin-Khan, an accident and emergency doctor and deputy leader of the Labour group on Wandsworth Council, was chosen as the Labour candidate.[5]

Dan Watkins is the Conservative Party's candidate.[6] He was the 2015 candidate and is currently the party's spokesman for Tooting and a local campaigner for issues including for a local station on the planned Crossrail 2 railway.[7]

Esther Obiri-Darko has been selected by the Green Party as their candidate. She also stood at the 2015 election.[8]

Alex Glassbrook, a local barrister and volunteer lawyer,[9] is the candidate for the Liberal Democrats.[10]

Elizabeth Jones, who recently stood in the London Assembly election is standing for the UK Independence Party (UKIP).[11]

Des Coke will stand for the Christian Peoples Alliance.[11]

Howling Laud Hope will stand as the candidate of the Monster Raving Loony Party.[11][12]

Zirwa Javaid is standing as an independent.[11]

Ankit Love, who was a candidate in the London mayoral election, is standing for One Love Party.[11]

Akbar Ali Malik is standing under the banner of the Immigrants Political Party.[11]

Graham Moore is standing for the English Democrats.[13]

Zia Samadani is one of three independent candidates.[11]

Smiley Smillie is an independent candidate.[11]

Bobby Smith, leader of Give Me Back Elmo and perennial election candidate, is standing.[11][12]

Former MP George Galloway had floated the idea of standing after his candidacy in the London mayoral election, but withdrew, citing fears of splitting the Labour vote and thus allowing the Conservatives to win.[14][15]
