Ute Daniel

Ute Daniel (born May 3, 1953 in Freiburg im Breisgau) is a German historian.

Biography

Ute Daniel studied history, German language and literature, and linguistics in Marburg and Bielefeld and received her doctorate in 1986 under Jürgen Kocka. In 1994 she habilitated at the University of Siegen. Since the winter semester 1996/97, she has been a professor of 19th/20th century and early modern history at the Technical University of Braunschweig, whose Faculty of Humanities and Education she chaired as dean from 2007 to 2009.

She has been a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2006.

Writings

Her range of research includes the social, cultural, and gender history of the modern era; she has published on World War I and World War II, the history of courts and court theater, the history of propaganda, the history of consumption, women's history, and the history of war reporting, among other topics.

Ute Daniel has become known to a broad public primarily through her work on historical methodology and theory, bundled in her compendium Kulturgeschichte (first published in 2001): She is one of the most prominent German-speaking representatives of the New Cultural History and has come into conflict with Hans-Ulrich Wehler in particular as the main representative of the Bielefeld School. Reinhart Koselleck, who also taught in Bielefeld, had a formative influence on her research.
