VPNBook is a virtual private network service that uses encrypted connection to mask original IP addresses during online surfing and peer to peer sharing.[1] ZeroPaid listed it as Number 1 on its list of Top Five Free VPN Services,[2] and on the PC Magazine review VPNBook received four out of five stars and it was depicted as having "decent performance".[3]

The service requires an OpenVPN client or means to establish a PPTP connection to be used. There are minimal variety of geographic locations. Available servers include the United States, Canada and Romania.[4] VPNBook is often used to bypass some governmental restrictions.[5][6]

Usage

The services offers two means of usage, connection via a third-party OpenVPN client or through PPTP. Any operating system that support PPTP connections can utilize VPNBook's service. The profile files for OpenVPN clients are available on VPNBook's website. The Mac OS X[7] iOS,[8] Android,[9] Ubuntu,[10] and Windows[11] operating systems all have PPTP support built in.

Platform

The software (OpenVPN clients) is installed on a separate operating system, which provides the protocol stack, file system, process scheduling and other features needed by the product.[12] However, any device that can establish a PPTP connection can utilize VPNBook. A variety of OpenVPN client are available on Windows 7, 8, XP, Mac OS X, Ubuntu, iOS and Android.
