The All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal (AIIMS Bhopal) is a medical research public university located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.[1][2] It is one of the seven AIIMS apex healthcare institutes being established by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna(PMSSY).The Institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (India).[3] AIIMS Bhopal's hospital was inaugurated on 26 January 2013[4][5]

Developments

  • AIIMS Bhopal launched a department of community and family medicine (CFM) in September 2012.[6][7] The department of CFM would offer a three-year MD in family practice to a large number of graduates.[8]
  • AIIMS Bhopal held the first academic seminar on 21 September 2012. The main speaker at the international seminar was Dean Brenner, who is a scientist at the University of Michigan in the USA.[9]
  • The Centre is mulling over setting up a Regional Institute of Paramedical Sciences in AIIMS Bhopal.[10][11]
  • A governing body has been established in AIIMS Bhopal to decide the treatment and admission charges. This body would be headed by the minister of health and family welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad; three MPs from the state would be also included in the governing body. The medicines in AIIMS Bhopal's drug stores would be 30% less expensive than the market price.[12]
  • AIIMS Bhopal formed the Institute Body (IB), the highest decision-making group in July 2013. Each of the six new AIIMS coming up in different states would have their own IB modelled on AIIMS, New Delhi.[13]
  • The Telemedicine Centre was established on 2 October 2013. Dr Surya Bali is working as Nodal Officer of the Telemedicine Centre.Telemedicine incorporates direct clinical, preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services and treatment; consultative and follow-up services; remote monitoring of patients; rehabilitative services; and patient education.[14]
  • In-patient services commenced at AIIMS Bhopal from 5th September 2014.[15]
  • The foundation day of AIIMS Bhopal was celebrated on 20/01/2015. Chief Minister of state Shri. Shivraj Singh Chouhan was the chief guest of the occasion.[16]
  • "A 4 bedded state of the art Sleep Lab was inaugurated by the Director Prof Nitin M Nagarkar on 19/06/15.[17] This facility also includes one dedicated pediatric sleep lab, which is first of its kind in India. The facility will cater to patients suffering from various sleep disorders"[18]
  • AIIMS Bhopal started online OPD registrations on 04/03/2016 via Online Registration System(ORS) which comes under Ministry of Communications and IT. AIIMS Bhopal is the first hospital from Madhya Pradesh to get enrolled in ORS.[19]
  • Department of Pediatrics organized International Pediatric Nephrology Association(IPNA) teaching course on 20th February 2016 focusing on kidney health of children and growing epidemic of childhood hypertension. The department runs Pediatric Nephrology and hypertension clinic on Wednesday where children with chronic renal conditions are taken care of. The department has also procured ambulatory blood pressure monitoring(ABPM) device which is the only tool to detect white coat hypertension.[20]
  • Department of Obstretics and Gynaecology conducted first state level inter college Obstretics and Gynaecology Quiz competition - ZYGOTE 2016 on 16th of April, 2016. The first and second positions were bagged by teams from AIIMS Bhopal.[21]

The AIIMS Bhopal logo signifies the light of erudition spreading all over, emanating from abode of stupa of Sanchi. Sanchi, in Sanskrit literally means – ‘to measure’ and represents complete harmony between mind, body and soul. The two serpents – signify the two shades of human existence which physicians encounter – Life & Death, Health & Disease. The saying “Sharirmadhyam khalu dharmasadhanam” has been quoted from a dramatic poem called Kumarasambhavam by Mahakavi Kalidasa. It means “ a healthy body is the means of fulfilments of dharma that is duty”. The olive branch symbolizes peaceful living.

Academics

In 2015, a total of 350 medical students are pursuing there MBBS courses. 180 nursing students are pursuing nursing degrees. PG programs are expected to start within a short time.

AIIMS Bhopal Club de Football (ABCF) is the official football team of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal established in 2013 by the students of second MBBS batch of the institution (MBBS 2013).[22]

Quiz Club AIIMS Bhopal is the official quiz club of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal established in June 2015. The club organizes quizzing sessions once in a month. KIQ is the name of annual Inter College Quiz Competition organized by Quiz Club. The first edition of KIQ was conducted on 6 March 2016.[23]

The Guest House

AIIMS Bhopal has a 14-room functioning Guest House. All rooms are double bedded and have internet facility. Two of the rooms are suites.
