China White (Chien Na Wei) is a fictional supervillain that appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. She first appeared in Green Arrow: Year One (Oct. 2007), and was created by Andy Diggle and Jock. White was primarily an adversary of Green Arrow in his early years.

Fictional character biography

China White was the leader of a drug cartel that dominated the South Pacific.[1] She supplied heroin imports for the West Coast United States, Australia, Japan and the entire Pacific rim from her base of operations on a volcanic island in Fiji. Many years ago, millionaire playboy Oliver Queen found himself manipulated into financing several of China White's operations, though he was unaware that he was secretly investing in a drug cartel. When Ollie's presence threatened to expose China White, she ordered the mercenary henchman Hackett to kill him. Hackett beat up Oliver and tossed him over the side of his boat, the Pacific Queen. Ollie survived and managed to make his way to the island. He discovered China White's poppy fields and learned that she had been using local villagers as slave labor to sow the fields. When she discovered that Hackett had failed to kill Oliver Queen, she ordered him to finish the job or else he would spend his last days being slowly eaten away in a rat-infested cage.[2]

Powers and abilities

White was a formidable martial artist, and was rumored to be a great assassin.

Kelly Hu as China White in Arrow.
  • Kelly Hu portrays China White (Chein Na Wei) as a recurring antagonist in the live-action series Arrow.[3] Introduced in "Honor Thy Father", China White is the leader of the Triad in Starling City. China has been working with an export magnate named Martin Somers (Ty Olsson). Martin handles the triad's drug exports and imports, and in return China keeps Martin rich as well as protected. Unfortunately for Martin, Oliver has reason to believe that Martin may have been one of the conspirators who orchestrated the attempted assassination on him and the murder of his father. Oliver, in his vigilante persona, confronts Martin with his latest involvement in the murder of a young girl's father but Oliver fails to apprehend him. Martin contacts China White to take out the vigilante and deal with Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) who is prosecuting Martin. Oliver takes another shot at Martin after China tried to murder Laurel in her apartment. Oliver makes Martin confess to the murder and combats China to a standstill. China also made an appearance in "Muse of Fire", which introduced the Huntress, which had China and the Triad try to meet with Frank Bertinelli (Jeffrey Nordling) and his right-hand man, Nick Salvati (Tahmoh Penikett). In "Dodger", White is hired by Moira Queen to kill Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman). In "Dead to Rights", China locates Deadshot (Michael Rowe) in a Blüdhaven apartment, and enlists him in the assassination with the offer of a new eyepiece appliance. While at the banquet for Malcolm, White's Triad members shut down the power and China ends up in conflict with Oliver, which almost gets her killed. She escapes after Oliver is forced to quit the fight to save Malcolm from Deadshot. She appears again in "Identity" where she and the Triad is stealing drugs from Glades Memorial Hospital to sell on the street. She enlists Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White) to help her kill Arrow. At the end of the episode she gets captured by one of Oliver's trick arrows and gets arrested. In "The Magician" flashbacks it is revealed that Edward Fyers attempt to blow up a plane embarked to Hong Kong from Lian Yu under orders of Amanda Waller, which was prevented by Oliver, was actually an attempt to kill China herself.
