Daizo Sasaki (born 20 November 1990) is a Japanese kickboxer, currently signed with K-1. He is the current Krush Super Lightweight and former Lightweight champion, as well as the 2018 K-1 Super Lightweight Grand Prix finalist.[1]

As of March 2022, he is the #6 ranked featherweight in the world according to Combat Press.[2]

Kickboxing career

Krush Lightweight title reign

Sasaki participated in the Krush Lightweight tournament, which began in January 2016 at Krush 62.[3] In the quarterfinal, Sasaki beat Hisaki Higashimoto by majority decision and Takayuki Minamino by unanimous decision in the semifinal. He faced Ren Hiramoto at Krush 66 in the tournament final, and won the fight by majority decision.[4] He was scheduled to defend his title against Hiroto Iwasaki at Krush 70. Sasaki beat Iwasaki by unanimous decision.[5]

Sasaki took part in the 2017 K-1 Lightweight Grand Prix, and faced Wei Rui in the quarterfinal. He lost to the eventual tournament winner by a second-round knockout.[6]

After a split decision win against Jin Ying at the Wu Lin Feng 2017: China VS Japan event, Sasaki was scheduled to defend the title for the second time against Toshiki Taniyama. He beat Taniyama by unanimous decision.[7] For his third title defense, Sasaki was scheduled to fight Gonnapar Weerasakreck at Krush 87.[8] Gonnapar won the fight by unanimous decision.[9]

Krush Super Lightweight title reign

Following his title loss, Sasaki went up in weight and participated in the 2018 K-1 Super Lightweight Grand Prix. He won decisions against Sam Hill in the quarterfinal and Jun Nakazawa in the semifinal, but lost the final match against Kaew Fairtex by unanimous decision.[10]

He lost his next fight against Rukiya Anpo as well,[11] but rebounded by winning his next two against Fukashi Mizutani[12] and Hayato Suzuki. He fought a rematch with Hayato Suzuki in his next fight, at Krush 111, for the Krush Super Lightweight title. Sasaki won the fight by unanimous decision.[13] Sasaki defended his title against Kensei Kondo at Krush 114, winning by unanimous decision.[14]

Sasaki's next fight was a non-title bout against Kota Nakano at Krush 118. He won the fight by unanimous decision.[15] Sasaki was scheduled to fight Tetsuya Yamato at K-1 World GP 2020 Winter's Crucial Bout,[16] and won by unanimous decision.[17]

Sasaki was scheduled to defend his Krush title against Jin Hirayama at Krush 125. He won the fight by unanimous decision.[18]

Sasaki was scheduled to face the former K-1 lightweight champion Kenta Hayashi at K-1 World GP 2021: Yokohamatsuri on September 20, 2021.[19] Sasaki won the fight by unanimous decision. He knocked Hayashi down twice in the second round, having been knocked down once himself.[20]

Sasaki was scheduled to face Vitor Toffanelli at K-1 World GP 2022 Japan on February 27, 2022.[21] He won the fight by unanimous decision, with all tree judges awarding him all three rounds of the bout.[22]
