On the 5 November 2011 the Gibraltar Rugby Football Union (GRFU) fielded a national team in its first official Test Match. The fixture was against the Belgium Development Team in Brussels. The final score was Belgium XV 20 Gibraltar XV 8. Test Caps have been awarded to the Gibraltar Team. Since they have played and won against a Cyprus XV and an Israel A team. Their first full international came against Malta in March 2015. This was a loss but an important step by playing full international team and not a development squad.
The GRFU went through the process of FIRA/AER (European Rugby Federation) membership.[1] The GRFU is planning other international fixtures versus international opponents for April 2012. This however was blocked by Spain.[2] This was a big blow to the GRFU and unexpected, as UEFA, FIFA and the ICC recognize Gibraltar.
There is also a Gibraltar National sevens team that plays regularly in tournaments, particularly in the Tangier Sevens.
