Harbor Isle is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 5,922 at the 2010 census. Harbor Isle is an unincorporated area of the Town of Hempstead.

Geography

Harbor Isle is located at Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found..[1] It is bordered by the Village of Island Park to the east, Hog Island Channel to the west and north, and Wreck Lead Channel to the south.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), of which, 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (21.74%) is water.

Demographics

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 5,922people, 3,855 households, and 4,368 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 7,326.0 per square mile (2,861.4/km2). There were 3,971 housing units at an average density of 2,729.4/sq mi (1,066.1/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 29% White, 42% African American, 1.12% Asian, 0.90% from other races, and 37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.37% of the population.

There were 490 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.0% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.0% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $21,000, and the median income for a family was $42,021. Males had a median income of $21,833 versus $37,792 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $30,192. About 47% of families and 43.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.1% of those under age 18 and 3.1% of those age 65 or over.
