Jermaine Mickel Grandison (born 15 December 1990) is an English football player who plays as a defender. He will leave Shrewsbury Town on the expiry of his contract on 30 June 2016.

Club career

Coventry City

A product of the Coventry City youth system, Grandison made his professional debut as a substitute on 25 April 2009 in a 3–2 Football League Championship loss to Watford.[2]

Tranmere Rovers (loan)

On 31 August 2010, Grandison made a transfer deadline day loan move to Football League One side Tranmere Rovers to gain first team experience. The move was an initial one-month deal, with an option for a further extension.[3] He made his debut that same evening in a Football League Trophy match against Accrington Stanley.[4] He returned to the club on 29 October 2010 for a second loan spell,[5] returning to his parent club on 3 January 2011.[6]

Shrewsbury Town

On 14 January 2011, Grandison signed for League Two side Shrewsbury Town, initially on loan.[7] However, on January transfer deadline day, he signed for the club permanently on a free transfer, on a two and a half-year contract.[8] He made his debut after signing on loan on 18 January 2011, in a 3–1 away win against Accrington Stanley.[9] He made his second debut after signing permanently in a 3–0 home win against Burton Albion on 1 February.[10] On 12 March 2011 he was sent off during a 5–0 loss to promotion rivals Torquay United.[11] Shrewsbury made the play-offs however they were beaten 2–0 on aggregate by Torquay in the semi-finals.[12] On 21 January 2012 he scored his first goal for the club, scoring a late header to win the game as Shrewsbury beat Southend United 2–1.[13]

Initially utilised at right back by then manager Graham Turner, Grandison was increasingly used as a central defender in the 2012–13 season in League One. He notably scored an outstanding individual goal against Notts County at Meadow Lane, picking up the ball on the half-way line and embarking on a mazy run, beating four opposition players singlehandedly before scoring from the edge of the box, giving Shrewsbury the lead in a match they would ultimately lose 3-2.[14] He was almost an ever-present in the side until picking up a pelvic injury in January 2013, making only one more appearance for the club thereafter.[15]

Having failed to come to an agreement on a new contract in the close season, Grandison was released by Shrewsbury Town, although they were obliged to work with him until he fully recovered from long term injury.[16][17] However, having come through 45 minutes of a reserve match against Port Vale unscathed Grandison agreed to rejoin the club on 3 December 2013[18] on a deal until the end of the 2013–14 season with Shrewsbury holding the option for a further year.[19] Having made three substitute appearances since re-signing, Grandison completed his first full 90 minutes in senior football in more than a year when he helped Shrewsbury to a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with local rivals Port Vale on 15 February 2014.[20]

Despite Shrewsbury suffering relegation back to League Two, both the player and club opted to exercise their option to extend the contract to the end of the 2014–15 season on 13 May 2014.[21] Initially left out of the team by new manager Micky Mellon, he made his first appearance of the season in a League Cup second round tie against Premier League side Leicester City at Filbert Way on 26 August, which Shrewsbury won 1-0.[22] Three weeks later, he scored his first senior goal in two years, the winner at home against Carlisle United,[23] before making his 100th league appearance for Shrewsbury in the next match against Newport County.

Grandison continued to be a regular in the side, winning promotion to League One as runners-up with the club for the second time in his career following a 1-0 win over Cheltenham Town on 25 April 2015.[24] He signed a fresh one-year contract extension, funded by club chairman Roland Wycherley in August 2015,[25] but was released at the end of the season having clocked up a total of 150 league appearances for the club over six seasons.[26]

Style of play

Grandison can perform in a variety of defensive positions - at right back, centre back or as a sweeper. Former Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner identified before the 2012/13 season:

He is known to regularly perform stepovers during matches,[28] and also posting videos of himself singing onto social media, which established him as a cult figure amongst Shrewsbury supporters.[29]
