The MLS SuperDraft is Major League Soccer's (MLS) primary mechanism of assigning soccer players to its teams. Prior to 2000, the draft was split into two sections: the supplemental and college. Originally, the supplemental draft dealt with players who were playing in the United Soccer Leagues, while the college draft dealt with players who had graduated from college. Beginning in 2000, these two drafts were combined into one, thus creating the SuperDraft. For a brief period between 2005 to 2008, the supplemental draft was reinstated because of Major League Soccer's contractual obligations with the Players' union. This version of the supplemental draft included players not previously selected and acted as an extension to the SuperDraft.
