Małgorzata Jamroży (born 30 June 1991), known by her stage name Margaret, is a Polish singer-songwriter with a degree in fashion design.[2] She began her musical career in 2009 as the vocalist for the band oNieboLepiej. Later she was the vocalist for the Gosia Jamroży Project, appeared in a musical, recorded songs for TV commercials, and became a fashion blogger.

She gained national and international recognition in 2013 after the release of her debut single, "Thank You Very Much", which was later included on her first EP All I Need. The song charted in the Top-50 in Austria, Germany, and Italy. In Poland it was the third best-selling digital single of 2013.

Her debut studio album, Add the Blonde, was released in 2014. It peaked at number eight in Poland and was certified platinum by the Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry (ZPAV). The album contained two Top-10 hits, "Wasted" and "Start a Fire" (the official song for 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship), as well as a Top-15 single "Heartbeat". In 2015, Margaret recorded a collaborative jazz album with Matt Dusk titled Just the Two of Us, which was certified gold by ZPAV.

In 2016, her single, "Cool Me Down", peaked at number four in Poland and became her first Top-5 hit there. The song was released as her second international single.

The singer has won many awards, including an MTV Europe Music Award, a Kids' Choice Award, and three Eska Music Awards. In 2014, Margaret was included on the list of 100 Most Valuable Stars of Polish Show Business compiled by the Polish edition of Forbes magazine.[3] The list is equivalent to the Forbes Celebrity 100 list.

Early years

Margaret was born in Stargard Szczeciński, to teachers Ryszard Jamroży and Elżbieta Jamroży. The singer has a brother Tomasz, four years her senior, with whom she grew up in Ińsko. She adopted the name "Julita" as her confirmation name.[4]

The singer attended the Schools Complex in Ińsko,[5] and graduated from XIV Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Szczecin.[6] She is also a graduate of Ignacy Jan Paderewski 1st degree State Music School in Choszczno, where she studied clarinet and saxophone.[7] After completing matura (secondary school), Margaret moved to Warsaw where she continued with English studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for three semesters. After resigning, she chose to study fashion design at the International School of Costume and Fashion Design in Warsaw, graduating in 2015 with a degree in fashion design.[2]

Musical career

Career beginnings

Margaret's career began during her senior year as a singer-songwriter in the band oNieboLepiej (Much Better), formed in early January 2009.[8] In the same year, Margaret won the 254th episode of the Polish reality-singing competition show Szansa na sukces (Chance for Success), performing "Znam Cię na pamięć", originally sung by Monika Brodka. She also performed in the main, annual concert at the Congress Hall in Warsaw.[9] In 2010, she starred in the musical Rent at the Szczecin Opera in the Castle.[10] Margaret has also been the singer-songwriter of the Gosia Jamroży Project (also known as the Margaret J. Project), a band she co-created, and with whom she performed at the semi-finals of the Coke Live Fresh Noise 2010 competition.[11] She also recorded songs for Polish TV commercials and provided vocals for the biopic Bokser.[12][13]

2012–2013: "Thank You Very Much" and All I Need

In 2012, she participated in the Trendy contest, during the 2012 TOPtrendy Festival at Sopot's Forest Opera amphitheatre, performing her debut single, "Thank You Very Much",[14] a sleeper hit which did not have a major impact until the release of its music video in 2013. Margaret collaborated with award-winning director Chris Marrs Piliero (who previously worked with The Black Keys, Britney Spears, and Kesha) to create a controversial music video, in which she was surrounded by thirty naked extras, to accompany the song.[15] This resulted in the video being banned from YouTube. It was later restored, with age restrictions, to her official channel. With this work, Margaret expressed her support for the right to nudity under the slogan "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity".[16] She defended her position by saying that: "even though YouTube, considered one of the leading defenders for freedom of speech of the 21st century, censored the video, I'm happy that my fans are able to understand it in another way."[16]

After the release of the music video the song became an instant hit in Poland. It was officially released for digital download on February 21, 2013, and went on to become the third best-selling digital single of 2013 in Poland.[17] The single has also reached number 41 on the official singles chart in Germany, number 38 in Austria and number 22 in Italy.[18][19][20] She later performed the song at many events, including Największe Przeboje Roku (Biggest Hits of the Year) concert at the 2013 Sopot TOPtrendy Festival[21] and on the popular German show, the ZDF Fernsehgarten, (ZDF Television Garden) broadcast live by ZDF.[22]

Margaret's second single, "Tell Me How Are Ya", was released on 9 July 2013.[23] In the Summer of 2013, the singer participated in the tour organised by Radio ZET and TVP2.[24] In late July, she was chosen to represent Poland at the 2013 Baltic Song Contest in Sweden,[25] where she sang "Thank You Very Much" and "I Get Along", finishing in second place.[26] On 30 July 2013, her EP All I Need was released only in Poland, and debuted at number 50 on the OLiS chart.[27] In late August, she performed at the Stars for Free 2013 concert in Berlin, organised by German radio station RTL Radio.[28]

Margaret was nominated in several categories at the Eska Music Awards 2013, including Best Female Artist, Best Hit (for "Thank You Very Much"), Best Music Video ("Thank You Very Much"), and Best Debut, winning an award for Best Music Video.[29][30] She was also nominated for Best Polish Act at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards.[31] In December 2013, she embarked on a promotional tour of Italy.[32]

On 31 December 2013, Margaret premiered "Wasted" with a live performance of the song at the Sylwestrowa Moc Przebojów (New Year's Eve Power of Hits) concert in Gdynia, Poland.[33] On 15 January 2014, the song was released for digital download in Poland and served as the lead single for her debut studio album.[34] The single peaked at number 6 on the Polish Airplay Chart.[35]

In February 2014, her first TV commercial for Play, a Polish cellular telecommunications provider, was released.[36] Since then she has appeared in many other promotional campaigns for different brands in Poland, including TV commercials for Deichmann and Coca-Cola, for which she recorded a Polish version of Robin Beck's "First Time" titled "Smak radości", and a Christmas song "Coraz bliżej święta" recorded with the finalists of 6th season of The Voice of Poland.[37][38][39]

In the summer, Margaret collaborated with Thomas Karlsson and Mats Tärnfors to create the official song of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in Poland.[40][41] "Start a Fire" was performed by Margaret at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Opening Ceremony on 30 August in front of 62,000 spectators in the National Stadium, Warsaw, prior to the Poland v. Serbia match. The event was broadcast in over 168 countries.[42][43]

Around that time she also recorded a theme song for the Polish TV series O mnie się nie martw. The song is a cover of Katarzyna Sobczyk's song of the same name.[44]

On 26 August, her debut studio album Add the Blonde was released exclusively in Poland. It reached number 8 on the Polish Albums Chart[45][46] and has received a platinum certification from ZPAV.[47] In late August, she performed at the NRJ Music Tour in Beirut, organised by Lebanese radio station, NRJ Lebanon.[48][49] In September, Margaret won Glamour Women of the Year Award.[50] In April 2015, she performed at the Top Music Wembley festival, held at the Wembley Arena in London.[51]

Her next single, "Heartbeat", was released in the first-half of 2015 and peaked at number 11 on the Polish Airplay Chart.[35] In August, Margaret won two Eska Music Awards for the Best Female Artist and Best Artist in Web.[52] At the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards, she won the award for Best Polish Act and, as a result, received a nomination for Worldwide Act: Europe.[53] In September, a clothing line designed by her for Sinsay, a fashion retailer, has been released under the name "Margaret for Sinsay".[54]

In the Autumn of 2015, she co-hosted Retromania, a TV show broadcast by TVP1.[55] She also collaborated with Canadian jazz singer Matt Dusk on an album of jazz standards called Just the Two of Us. It was released on 6 November 2015, only in her native country, and peaked at number 28 on the Polish Albums Chart.[45][56] The album was certified gold by ZPAV.[57]

2016–present: "Cool Me Down"

In February 2016, it was announced that Margaret would compete in Krajowe Eliminacje 2016, Poland's national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, to be held in Stockholm, Sweden.[58] She performed the song "Cool Me Down" and finished in 2nd place,[59] despite being bookies' and ESC fans' favourite to win both the national final and the whole Eurovision Song Contest.[60][61] "Cool Me Down" reached number 4 on the Polish Airplay Chart.[35]

In March, Margaret won Kids' Choice Award for Favourite Polish Star.[62]

In April, her single "Cool Me Down" was released worldwide via Warner Music Group.[58]

Notes

  1. When "Thank You Very Much" was popular in Poland, ZPAV only published the Top-5 of the Official Polish Airplay Chart (now it is the Top-100), which may explain why the single did not appear on the chart.
