Nam Woo-hyun (Hangul남우현; hanja南優賢; born February 8, 1991),[1] commonly known by his stage name Woohyun, is a South Korean singer, composer, songwriter and actor. He has been a member of boy band Infinite[2] since 2010 and debuted as a solo artist on May 9, 2016. His first solo album, called Write.., includes a total of 6 songs, 3 of which are self-composed. [3]

Biography

Nam Woo Hyun was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. He graduated from Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts, majoring in Applied Music.[4] He has an older brother, Nam Boo Hyun. He is the owner of a popular BBQ restaurant, 먹&삼 생고기집, located in Suyu, Seoul.[5]

In an interview with 10asia, Woohyun stated that he originally aspired to be a soccer player.[6] However, he eventually realized his next dream of becoming a singer when he was in high school. He auditioned at Woollim Entertainment to pursue a career in music as a solo singer.[7] He passed the audition with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Lately". At that point, he was accepted into Woollim along with 2 other agencies, one of which being YG.[8] He ultimately decided to go with Woollim and began training as an idol trainee. He worked hard to practice dancing instead.[9]

Prior to debuting with Infinite, Woohyun was a model for a shopping mall alongside Beast's Jun-hyung and T-ara's Ji-yeon.[10] He competed in the 6th Hello Star Contest performing Lee Hyori's U Go Girl.[11] In one of his first broadcast appearances, he played the lead role in KooPD's music video for 귀가 멀어 in 2007.[12] Later in 2009, he appeared on Mnet's 소녀펀치 (Girl Punch) and sang Lee Seung-gi's 하기 힘든 말 (Words that are hard to say).[13]

Well known for his fan service, Woohyun once spent 3 million won to give fans silver rings and flowers during INFINITE's 2013 World Tour, One Great Step.[14]

Woohyun made his debut as the main vocal of South Korean boy band Infinite in 2010. The group official debuted on June 10, 2010.[15]

Toheart

On February 20, 2014 SM Entertainment released a teaser announcing Toheart, a special unit duo consisting of Woohyun and Key of Shinee.[16] A second prologue teaser was released on February 27.[17] Following that, a music video teaser was released on 4 March 2014.[18] The duo's mini-album track preview video was released on March 6.[19] Toheart debuted with Delicious on March 10[20] and made their live debut on March 12 during their MelOn Premiere Showcase.[21]

Solo debut

In early-April 2016, Woollim Entertainment confirmed that Woohyun was currently preparing for his solo album in May.[22]On April 26, Woollim Entertainment released the first teaser image. Woohyun's first mini album, titled Write.., will be released on May 9.[23]

The album Write.. was released along with the MV of the title song "Nod Nod" on May 9, 2016 at 12AM KST. [24]

Other activities

In September 2011, Woohyun joined Immortal Songs 2 as a fixed member.[25] His first performance on the show aired on October 1. On November 1, it was announced that he would be leaving the show due to Infinite's upcoming Japanese promotions.[26] His final episode aired on November 5.

In December 2012, Woohyun was selected to be part of one of SBS's Gayo Daejun 2012 project teams, Dramatic Blue,[27] along with Beast's Yoseob, 2AM's Jo Kwon, MBLAQ's G.O, and Teen Top's Niel. Under the banner 'The Color of K-pop', Dramatic Blue released and performed the track "Tearfully Beautiful", produced by Sweetune.[28]

Early 2013, he took part in Re;code,[29] a duet project with Korean indie pop singer, Lucia, covering Epitone Project's "선인장" (Cactus).[30]

His OST for the SBS drama Modern Farmer 사랑이 올 때 (When Love Comes) was released digitally on October 24, 2014.[31]

Acting career

Musicals

Woohyun made his debut as a musical actor, along with band member Sungkyu, in the musical Gwanghwamun Sonata,[32] playing the role of Ji-yong from January 3 to March 11, 2012. He reprised the role in Japan from January 4 to January 6, 2013.

Drama

Woohyun made his acting debut in July 2012 in a minor role in the drama The Thousandth Man, alongside T-ara's Hyomin.[33]

In April 2014, it was announced that Woohyun would be starring in the KBS2 drama Hi! School-Love On alongside fellow Infinite member Lee Sung-yeol and rising child actress Kim Sae-Ron. The 20 episode drama aired once a week on Fridays at 20:55KST from July 11 to December 19, 2014.[34]

Voice Acting

Woohyun and other members of Infinite dubbed the children's cartoon Wara Store from December 27, 2011 to March 27, 2012 as themselves.

Directing

December 2014 marked Nam Woohyun's directorial debut with the short horror film, 홍콩에서 생긴일 (What Happened in Hong Kong).[35]

FC Men

Woohyun currently plays as a striker for the South Korean celebrity football club, FC Men. Having previously played for FC One, he was recruited to FC Men in early 2015.[36] He made his football debut with FC Men on 17 May 2015, in a charity match against Jeju United FC.[37]
