Manager Wilhelmina Models [1] Bella Models and Milk Management[2]

Robyn Lawley (born 13 June 1989)[6] is an Australian model from the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia. She is best known as one of three cover models of Vogue Italia's June 2011 issue, the second plus-size model to cover Elle France, the first plus-size model to be shot for Australian Vogue and GQ Australia and the first Australian plus size model to be on the cover of Australia Cosmopolitan. She has worked with notable photographers including Greg Kadel, Kenneth Willardt, Rankin, Raphael Mazzucco and Steven Meisel.[7][8] She is also notable for being the first plus-size model to appear in a campaign for Ralph Lauren.[9] She was the first model for Mango's line Violeta by Mango.[10] Lawley's first beauty campaign was Barneys New York Holiday 2013. Robyn's swimwear line, in sizes 8 (US) to 18 (US), launched in August 2013. Robyn was voted the winner of the Australian Cosmopolitan Fun, Fearless Female, Rising Star Award 2011.[11] Robyn was also selected for Sydney Magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People of the year award for 2011.[12] In June 2013, Robyn was awarded Model of the Year during the Full Figured Fashion Week.[13] Lawley has written two articles on body image for The Daily Beast. Robyn released a cookbook in 2014, Robyn Lawley Eats. In 2015, Robyn became Sports Illustrated's first plus-sized model to be featured in the magazine's annual Swimsuit Issue.[14]

Early life and family

Robyn was born in Girraween, New South Wales,[6] to Chris and Janne Lawley; and has two older sisters, Shona and Jennifer.[15] Robyn attended Macarthur Girls High School. Robyn went to see a mainstream agency when she was 15 and although they were ready to sign her, she didn't feel ready.[16] After taking a year off she returned and started doing straight size modeling for a year.[16] Finding it to be not worth the effort of maintaining the size 8 that was required, she signed with Bella model management, a "plus size" modeling agency in Australia, when she was 18.

Career

Model

Lawley is represented by Bella Models,[5] Wilhelmina Models in New York, and Milk Management in the United Kingdom.[2][4]

Lawley's career has improved since she decided to switch from straight size to "plus-size" modeling. Her first magazine shoot was for Dolly in 2006. At the beginning of her career she has appeared for the plus size clothing range for New Zealand brand EziBuy. Since then she has been on the cover of high-end fashion magazine French Elle in April 2011,[8] two covers of French Revue des Modes Fall Winter 2011 issue,[17] and one of the May 2012 covers of French Marie Claire.[18] Her most notable cover was for the June 2011 issue of Vogue Italia along with plus sized models Tara Lynn and Candice Huffine, which was shot by Steven Meisel.[8][19] In addition, she appeared on the March 2012 cover of Madison Magazine, where she became the first Australian plus-sized model to be on the cover of an Australian fashion magazine.[20]

Lawley was also Vogue Australia's first plus size model to appear in an editorial specifically produced for Vogue Australia in the magazine's 52-year history.[21] The Vogue Australia's Editor-in-Chief, Kirstie Clements, noted: "This is the first time Vogue Australia has shot a larger model and, of course, now that we have done it, I ask myself why we didn’t do it sooner. But that's because Robyn is especially gorgeous. I went to the shoot to meet her and was transfixed by her beauty and poise. She is a truly super-duper model. When a plus-size model first turns up to the studio, she may be an anomaly to a team normally used to working with size-6's, but once photographer Max Doyle started shooting Robyn, we quickly readjusted our preconceived notions of beauty. She doesn’t actually look plus size to me at all now."[22]

Lawley has also appeared in many magazine editorials, most notably two editorials in Vogue Italia June 2011 Sogno di Donna shot by Steven Meisel, and The Now Shape shot by Pierpaolo Ferrari,[23][24] as well as Fashion Voluptueuse Elle France April 2011 shot by Lee Broomfield.[25] Other editorial work includes Pussycat Kill Kill shot by Thierry Le Goues for French Revue des Modes Fall Winter 2011,[26] Lovecat magazine in September 2011,[27] Austrian Flair magazine,[28] Dazed & Confused[8] in November 2011, Black magazine in January 2012,[8] Gioia in April 2012,[29] Marie Claire France in May 2012,[30] Vanity Fair Italy in May 2012,[31] Glamour Magazine USA in July 2012,[32] The Look Magazine in September 2012,[33] Cosmopolitan UK in November 2012[34] and Glamour Spain in November 2013.[35] Lawley has appeared in many editorials for Australian magazines including multiple issues of Australian Cosmopolitan,[36][37] The Australian Women's Weekly[38] Madison magazine,[39][40] and GQ Australia.[41]

Lawley has walked runways around the world most notably in a one-model show for OneStopPlus for Fashion Week, streamed on to a New York Times Square moving billboard, Elena Miro in Milan Fashion Week[42] and Peter Morrissey[43] for Sydney's Fashion Week.

Lawley has appeared in advertising for many plus-size brands, including Evans,[44] Lane Bryant,[45] Marina Rinaldi[46] and Persona Collezioni.[47] Lawley modeled for the debut of H & M's inclusive line.[48] She modeled for the debut and several other collections of Swan by Clements Ribeiro for Evans, designed by husband and wife duo Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro.[44][49][50] Lawley appeared in the debut campaign for Sculptresse, a line by full-figure bra, lingerie and swimwear brand Panache.[51] Lawley was the first plus-size model to be used in in-store advertising for Ralph Lauren.[9] Lawley appeared in Lane Bryant's rebranding campaign, which included print magazine ads and several billboards in New York City.[45] She was the first model for Mango's plus-size line, Violeta by Mango.[10]

Lawley has also appeared in advertising for mainstream brands such as Calezdonia's Summer 2012 campaign photographed by Raphael Mazzucco and Boux Avenue lingerie. She appeared in several Chantelle lingerie campaigns photographed by Greg Kadel along with models such as Maryna Linchuk.[9][52][53] Her first beauty campaign was Face Time for Barneys New York Holiday 2013, photographed by Ben Hassett.[54]

Lawley was photographed by Kenneth Willardt for a fine art exhibition, Size Does Matter.[55][56][57][58] The show was on exhibit from November to December 2013 at the 588 Gallery in Chelsea.[55][56][57] Lawley was photographed nude with various animals, including rabbits, an owl, an octopus and tarantulas.[55][56][57] Each image in the exhibit had a QR code.[59] When the QR code was scanned with a cell phone, added movement in the image was visible on the cell phone screen.[55][59] In addition to the images in the gallery, a billboard with Lawley flanked by bunnies was placed on the West Side Highway in Manhattan.[55][59]

In early 2015, Robyn Lawley became a Sports Illustrated "Rookie", making her the first "plus-size" model to be featured in the magazine's annual Swimsuit Issue.[14] The assistant managing editor of Sports Illustrated had stated that Lawley "had been on her radar for years and is being highlighted as a model rather than as a "plus size" model." [14]

Fashion design

Lawley's swimwear line, designed by Lawley in collaboration with Bond-Eye Swimwear, launched in August 2013.[60][61] The swimwear was produced in sizes 8 (US) to 18 (US), with plans to extend the size range in the future.[61]

Photography

Lawley photographed Tara Lynn for Galore Magazine Issue 4.[62] Lawley's photographs of Leah Kelley in her swimwear line went viral on social media and were covered by notable fashion websites.[63][64]

Cooking

The success of Lawley's food blog, "Robyn Lawley Eats" led to her receiving a contract with Random House to publish a cookbook with original recipes, family recipes and tips on eating at restaurants around the world.[52] Her recipes have been featured on Australian television and on the website of Good Morning America.[65][66]

Writing

Lawley has written two articles on body image for The Daily Beast. Her first article, in September 2012 addressed the media's response to Lady Gaga's weight gain.[67] The second article, in October 2013, addressed the thigh gap trend.[68] In 2014, Robyn wrote an article for The Daily Mail, expressing her disdain that the Australian government is still reliant on mining and fossil-fuels when there are lucrative sustainable resources [69]

Personal life

Lawley and her partner Everest Schmidt, a lawyer with the Paul Law Group and former Lafayette College basketball player, are the parents of a daughter, Ripley, born on 26 February 2015.[70]

Awards

Lawley was voted the winner of the Australian Cosmopolitan Fun, Fearless Female, Rising Star Award 2011.[11] Lawley was also selected for Sydney Magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People of the year award for 2011.[12] In June 2013, Lawley was awarded Model of the Year during the Full Figured Fashion Week.[13]
