Thomas "Tommy" Smales (January→March 1939 (age 84–85)[1]) birth registered in Pontefract, is an English professional rugby league footballer of the 1950s and 1960s, and coach of the 1970s, and 1980s, playing at club level for Wigan, Barrow, and Featherstone Rovers, as a Loose forward/Lock, i.e. number 13, and coaching at club level for Featherstone Rovers, Bramley, Doncaster, Batley, and Dewsbury.[2]

Challenge Cup final appearances

Tommy Smales played Loose forward/Lock, scored a try, two conversion's and a penalty, in Featherstone Rovers's 17-12 victory over Barrow in the 1967 Challenge Cup final during the 1966-67 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 13 May 1967.

County Cup final appearances

Tommy Smales played Loose forward/Lock, and scored 3-conversions in Featherstone Rovers' 12-25 defeat by Hull Kingston Rovers in the 1966 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1966–67 season at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday 15 October 1966, and played Loose forward/Lock in Featherstone Rovers' 9-12 defeat by Hull in the 1969 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1969–70 season at Headingley Stadium, Leeds on Saturday 20 September 1969.

Genealogical information

Tommy Smales is the father of the rugby league footballer, Ian Smales.

Note

Somewhat confusingly, Tommy Smales played in the same era as the unrelated Great Britain, England, Huddersfield, Bradford Northern, and North Sydney Bears Scrum-half/Halfback of the 1960s and 1970s, Tom "Tommy" Smales.
