Seattle Sounders FC is an American soccer club founded in 2008, after the city of Seattle was awarded a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise. Sounders FC began playing competitive soccer in the 2009 season. It plays its home games at CenturyLink Field, competing in the Western Conference of the MLS. The current Sounders FC is the third soccer team from Seattle to bear the Sounders nickname. The tradition was started by Seattle's North American Soccer League team in 1974, and continued by the city's United Soccer Leagues side, formed in 1994.[1] The current Sounders FC is an entity distinct to both of these clubs, and played its first MLS game on March 19, 2009, against Red Bull New York.[2]

As of April 16, 2016, a total of 90 players have participated in at least one league match for Sounders FC. Fredy Montero is the club's all-time top scorer with 47 goals, and he is tied with Mauro Rosales for the club record in assists with 34.[3] A total of 45 Sounders FC players have represented their country at full international level. Clint Dempsey has made the most international appearances (122 for the United States), and scored the most goals (49).[4]

Players

Major League Soccer clubs are allowed a roster of 28 players at any one time during the MLS season.[5] Players who were contracted to the club but never played an MLS game are not listed.

Sounders FC's most used goalkeeper is former United States international Kasey Keller, who captained Seattle in their first season of competitive soccer.[85] In the team's first three seasons, Sounders FC's other keepers only played in MLS matches when Keller was unavailable due to suspension.[86]

MLS regulations permit teams to name eight players from outside of the United States in their rosters. However, this limit can be exceeded by trading international slots with another MLS team, or if one or more of the overseas players is a refugee or has permanent residency rights in the USA.[99] As of April 19, 2014, thirty three players from outside the United States have played in MLS for Seattle Sounders FC.
