Manbazar II (community development block) is an administrative division in Purulia Sadar East subdivision of Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Boro police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Jamtoria.[1][2]

History

Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra of 5th century AD mentions that Purulia was one of the sixteen mahajanapadas and was a part of the kingdom known as Vajra-bhumi in ancient times. In 1833, Manbhum district was carved out of Jungle Mahals district, with headquarters at Manbazar. In 1838, the headquarters was transferred to Purulia. In 1956, Manbhum district was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Reorganization Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act 1956.[3]

Manbazar II community development block has an area of 419.50  km2.[2]

The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills.[4]

The Kangsabati Project has submerged large areas of Purulia District in the Manbazar area.[5]

Gram panchayats of Manbazar II block/ panchayat samiti are: Ankro-Borokadam, Bargoria-Jamtoria, Barijagda, Boro-Jaragora, Buribandh, Dighi and Kumari.[6]

Demographics

As per 2001 census, Manbazar II block had a total population of 85,160, out of which 43,295 were males and 41,865 were females. Manbazar II block registered a population growth of 7.86 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Purulia district was 13.96 per cent.[2] Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[7]

In Manbazar II bloc, the scheduled tribe population was 43,826, which was almost half of the total population. The scheduled caste population was 7,266.[8]

Literacy

As per 2001 census, Manbazar II block had a total literacy of 53.52 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 73.04 per cent female literacy was 33.36 per cent. Purulia district had a total literacy of 55.57 per cent, male literacy being 73.72 per cent and female literacy being 36.50 per cent.[9]
