In 2004, the 101EX, a grand tourer coupe prototype based on the 100EX, was presented at the Geneva International Auto Show.

The 101EX shares its aluminium space frame chassis technology with the 2003 Phantom, albeit in a shortened version. The car is 9.5 inches (241 mm) shorter than the Phantom saloon, with a lower roofline and shallower glass area. Power comes from the Phantom's 6.75-litre V12 engine. The production version of this car, the Phantom Coupé, debuted at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. This car was featured in the movie Johnny English Reborn, and for the movie Rowan Atkinson asked of BMW to use one of the V16s intended originally for the Phantom, to which BMW agreed.

The 101EX has 770BHP at 5900rpm and 1100lb*ft of torque at 2900rpm.
