St. Mary's Catholic Church is a Catholic church at 123 Columbia Street in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. The church was designed by Charles Eames and built in 1935-36.[2]
Description
St. Mary's church is described as competent and professional, with great attention to detail. Notable details feature brick coursing, hanging lamps designed as dark globes. The steeple, buttresses, and arches echo Middle European traditions.[3]
A writeup of the church was published in Architectural Forum, which caught the attention of Eliel Saarinen. Saarinen wrote a congratulatory letter to Eames and offered him a fellowship at Cranbrook Academy of Art to study architecture.[4]
The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.[1]
