Louis Marthe, marquis de Gouy d'Arsy[1] (15 July 1753 – 23 July 1794) was a French general and politician.

Biography

Louis Marthe was born in Paris, the son of Louis de Gouy d'Arsy, Lieutenant general of the King's Army and Knight of the Order of Saint Louis, and Yvonnette de Rivié de Riquebourg. He entered service in 1768, as a musketeer in the second company, then on September 9, 1770, he was second lieutenant in the Besançon regiment of the royal artillery corps. In 1774, he was made captain in the 6th Dragoon Regiment, then in 1782, he became second camp-master in the 1st Cuirassier Regiment.

In 1763, he was a reformed captain in the 6th Dragoon Regiment, and was made a Knight of Saint-Louis in 1786. In 1789, he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment, and on July 26, 1791, he became colonel of the 6th Dragoon Regiment. He was promoted to brigadier general on February 6, 1792.

He was made lieutenant general in the government of Île-de-France, Vexin, president of the nobility of Melun and great baillif of the sword at the bailiwick of Melun and Moret. Gouy d'Arsy was also administrator of the water company of Paris.

In the elections of 1789, he was elected deputy of the nobility of Saint-Domingue to the Estates General. Gouy d'Arsy was among the signatories of the Tennis Court Oath. He was an active member of the Club de l'hôtel de Massiac, a Freemason (lodge of "La Candeur") at the Orient de Paris.

He was guillotined on July 23, 1794 in Paris, after the judgment of the Revolutionary Tribunal following the Conspiracy of Prisons.
