1917 Birthday Honours
The 1917 Birthday Honours were appointments by King George V to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of The King, and were published on 4 June.[1]
The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour, and arranged by honour, with classes (Knight, Knight Grand Cross, etc.) and then divisions (Military, Civil, etc.) as appropriate

- Henry Herbert Hambling, Is the son of the late Colonel W. J. Hanmbling of Dunstable, Beds, and- has been the general manager and director of the London and South- Western Bank for some time. Is also a director of Cox and-. Co. (France) (Limited), bankers in France, and chairman of the General Committee of the Bank Clerks' Orphanage. Served on a Government Commission on Post Office Buildings in 1912, when he delivered a minority report, and he has been of considerable assistance to the Government during the course of the present war.
- Alfred Farthing Robbins, FJ.I. London correspondent of the Birmingham Daily Post since 1888, and equally well known in Fleet- street, the 'Lobby of the House of Commons, and at theatrical first nights, he was president of the Institute of Journalists in 1908, and has been chairman of its Orphan Fund since 1911. A prominent Fremason, he is president of the Board of General Purposes in the United Grand Lodge of England.

- Robert Jones CB FRCS Is universally acknowledged to be the greatest orthopaedic surgeon in Britain .His record is an exceedingly brilliant one, and since the outbreak of war his services have been eagerly sought by the military authorities. Thanks largely to his efforts, military orthopaedic hospitals have been established all over the country. Colonel Jones is attached personally to the Military Orthopaedic Hospital at Hammersmith, to the hospital at Liverpool, and to the Roehampton Hospital. The marvels of restorative surgery which have been accomplished testify to the value of the work carried on by him and under his direction.
- W. J. Ashley. Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at Birmingham since 1002; Professor of Economics at several universities. His books include " Progress of the German Working Classes" and "Economic. Organization of England.
- Graham Balfour, Director of Education for Staffordshire since 1903; son of Dr. T. Graham Balfour FRS President of the Royal Statistical Society. He published, in 1898, a book on the "Educational . Systems of Great Britain and Ireland," built is' best known for h is " Life of R. L. Stevenson," which was published in 1901, and reached its 16th edition in 191f.

- William Watson Watson, who was born in 185S, long ago made his reputation as a poet and has consistently maintained it, He has been a stedfast adherent to the best traditions of his art, a jealous guardian of the English language, choosing his words fastidiously, and getting the maximum effect out of them, intolerant both by precept and example of the hasty and the formless. His verse has frequently given expression to English political ideals, notably, at the Coronation of 1902, and on a number of occasions, often in The Times, since the war.
