Gülüstü Kadınefendi (Turkish pronunciation: [ɟylysˈty]), Gülistan Münire Kadınefendi (or Gülistü), or Princess Fatma Chachba (c. 1831 – May 1861) (Gülüstü, Gülistü meaning "Rose garden") was the wife of Sultan Abdülmecid I, and the mother of Mehmed VI and Mediha Sultan, Zekiye Sultan and Fehime Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

Biography

Born in 1831 in Sukhumi Gülüstü was of Abkhazian origin. Born as Fatma Chachba, she was the daughter of Prince Tahir Bey Shervashidze,[1] the son of Kelesh Ahmed Bey Shervashidze, and his wife Afise Hanım Lakerba.[2][3] In 1828, during the Russian-Ottoman war of 1828-29, her family emigrated from the Caucasus to Istanbul, where she was delivered at the court of the Ottoman Sultan.[2] She was renamed Gülüstü and was given thoroughly Turkish and Muslim education in the harem department of the Topkapı Palace.

At the age of about fourteen Gülüstü married Abdülmecid in August 1854 at the Topkapı Palace. The marriage was due to her father's efforts to establish political alliance between the Ottoman Empire. Gülüstü was fond of jewelry and clothes. She also made a great contributions in the restoration of mosques and madrassas.[2] Her son Mehmed became the thirty-sixth and last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 1918 to 1922.[2] She died just three months after giving birth to her son. Since Mehmed VI became sultan long after Gülüstü's death, she was never a Valide Sultan.[4]

Her burial place is located at the Gülüstü Münire Sultan Türbe[5] in front of the mihrab of Fatih Camii in Fatih, Istanbul.
